I am heading off on a round the world trip in November (SE Asia-Austrailia-New Zealand) and was wondering if anybody has any advice on where I could obtain the best cheap travel insurance to cover me for the year, best cover options, best companies offering it and who to avoid.

This is all new to me so your help would be appreciated.

I can advise against Trailfinders' Travel Insurance. They're useless. When we were mugged they told us they didn't cover mobile phones and even after we got a police report in Argentina, they still didn't pay. They said we'd have to wait til we got home?? What use is that??!?! Home over 3 months now and still no sign of anything from them.

Don't get me wrong though, it's only their travel insurance that's rubbish. Everything else about Trailfinders is great. Couldn't recommend them enough!

Unfortunately, I don't have any recommendations of companies, but just some advice. Always, always, always, read the small print. The amount of people that don't bother and then whinge when they can't claim anything is unbelievable.

Also, you get what you pay for. If you get the cheapest cover, it will more than likely not include very much. If you intend on doing any kind of extreme sports (includes skiing), then make sure you get cover for this. If, God forbid, anything happens, and you're not covered, the insurance company will ensure that there is no payout.

Cheers, I actually booked my trip with Trailfinders but found their insurance premiums as well as visa admin charges excessive so I decided to look elsewhere. Still havent booked any insurance yet but I expect it will cost around the £150 mark as a minimum.
I was thinking of doing it on the cheap but this God forbid could come back to haunt me and cost me more in the long run so I will have shop around and make sure I get the best cover for a reasonable price.

I went with World Nomads on my RTW trip http://www.worldnomads.com/?gclid=CM6u2PCFjqMCFQxBlAodmxx7Xg

They seemed good enough compared with other policies I was looking at at the time, but I've never had to claim anything from them so I couldn't say how good they are in a bad situation.

The amount of posts in Boards saying that all policies are the same and just go for the cheapest is stupid. Get a quote from a few and then read the policies. How hard is that to do? If you're happy with the cheapest then great just read it so you will have no surprises.

I've a feeling there's some insurance companies with Boards usernames posting.
One of my cousins is coming back from Canada early because he failed. He saved a few quid on the insurance and after he failed he decided to read what was covered and that wasn't one of them. I feel sorry for him but that was a stupid thing to do.

I used Trailfinders insurance a few years ago going to Australia. I had problems with a tooth when I was down there and had no hassle getting the cost refunded. It wasn't much and I can't remember which insurance company they used (or if they still use the same ones). Verbal didn't have a good experience with them so maybe the insurance company they use is different now or maybe it was a different policy.
