Toyoya Corolla/burning oil

Hey all,

I've a problem with a corolla that I've had for over a year - it's a '97 xli estate and it burns oil like it's going out of fashion. I'm using 15W40 instead of the recommended 5W30 and that has helped a little but I'm wondering if there will be any long-term issues on that account.

I noticed recently that my fuel consumption has dropped to about 32/33 mpg compared to 40/45 mpg when I first started driving it. I changed the air-filter and checked the plugs (they're ok) - but still no change. Could this have anything to do with using a heavier oil?

It could have bore wear - this would account for both the oil usage and the heavier fuel consumption.

have you got much blue smoke? is it down on power? i reckon you've got worn piston rings, valve seals or both. second hand engine is your easiest fix

Maybe you could try thicker oil, op,

for instance 10w60 if your Corolla accepts it.

Many of the old jappers use a drop. she is 13 after all

Top it up once a week with the cheapest oil you can find is the easiest fix! As for "long term" issues, it surely doesn't owe you much OP? Drive it til something major goes wrong, then move on... if it runs for another two years with nothing more than a few litres of oil then how bad...
The next year is going to be interesting on my own banger, what will be the final straw to break the bangers back?
