    but i don't have a clue about anything to do with computers.
    anyway i have a dell inspiron 6400 about three years old and its running xp. i have no budget as i haven't a clue about what this may cost but the cheaper the better what i want is to strip it and put shiny new parts into it so i can run this game http://www.darkfallonline.com/index.html
    which has specs as follows;

    Windows XP/Vista, Pentium 4 2.5GHz, 1 GB RAM, 12 GB hard disk space, PixelShader 2.0 compatible 128 MB graphics card

    i need it in a laptop because i am just about to start a job in the navy and will be at sea for ages so i don't wanna bring a massive computer with me.
    any help will be great, thanks

    sorry mods, wasn't paying attention where i was putting this.

    You can't "build" a laptop per se, you can upgrade the memory and drives and sometimes upgrade the CPU to one very similar (both functionally and thermally) to the original, but that's it aside from peripherals. There was once an MSI chassis built around the concept but as it was from the days before MXM became the graphics standard for portables the chassis was lumbered with a mediocre 8600GTM that put off the gaming niche it was targetted at :o

    Nowadays you could theoretically create a fully upgradeable laptop chassis similar to a desktop, but no such chassis exists for the domestic consumer AFAIK plus even if they did decent MXM modules (read: graphics cards) are still staggeringly expensive :o

    So its a new pre-built gaming laptop for you. Hope you brought a hefty wallet! :o

    you can play online games while at sea?

    wouldnt the ping times be monumental, assuming it would be satelite internet?

    OP i'd find out more about the internet you can use while at sea before spending loads on a laptop that would be redundant.
