Help me to eat more fish!

    At the moment, the only fish I can stomach is smoked haddock. I know all the health benefits associated with fish so I want to work up to eating fish 3/4 times a week.
    Has anyone here had to train themselves to like fish?I think one of the main problems I have with it is the fear of the bones in it.
    What fish should I start out with?I tried a bit of plaice the other day and found the taste way too strong so any advice would be really appreciated.

    I also have a problem of bony fish - not an irrational fear though as I once ended up in A+E with a salmon bone stuck in my throat! But there are ways around this that you can still incorporate fish.

    First of all you can get boneless seafood like scallops, prawns and crabmeat so no fear of bones there. Scallops have quite a strong fishy flavour but maybe start with some prawns and try cooking them in different ways; they're really delicious.

    Tinned fish is also quite useful. I've never found a bone in tinned tuna. Tinned salmon tends to have bones but you can simply go through it when you open it and use your hands to remove any bones; this way you can eat it knowing there's definitely nothing bony left in there.

    Another idea is to try fish steaks like swordfish or tuna - these are boneless and really easy to cook, like cooking a piece of beef steak. You could also try ray wings - although they have bones they are really big and clunky so you can't miss them. Once the fish is cooked it literally peels off the bone and melts in your mouth.

    I'm a divil for the tuna - I love a tuna lunch. For something fast, I love those john west tuna pouches with lime and black pepper. Nom!! Tuna, sweetcorn, pasta and black pepper is lovely. Also, if you get a bit of tagliatelli, some spring onions and mushrooms, a tub of alpro cream and some shredded smoked salmon, it makes a lovely salmon tagliatelli. I think I want that for dinner now...

    I'm the same. Can't stand the taste of oily fish. Repeats something woeful. Cod, haddock, and salmon ok. Monkfish a few times was ok. Salmon cooked with teriyaki. Still repeats on me but don't mind as much.

    Plaice is one of the mildest tasting fish available, so I dont really know what to suggest if you find it too strong.

    Also, one of the major health benefits of fish (omega-3 oils) are only found in large quantities in oily fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna) not white fish ( cod, plaice).

    Try fish with a sauce that you like.

    A few suggestions

    Salmon with a spicy tomato sauce is fab
    Any white fish with a white wine sauce, or lemon sauce
    Tuna can take lots of different sauces,

    IF you like smoked haddock maybe you would like smoked mackerel.

    As for bones, only buy fish from a fish monger or the fish counter in a good supermarket ( Supervalu or Superquinn) and ask him to remove all bones.

    Buy fish with bones that are easy to remove or has no bones ( monkfish fillets have no bones, salmon fillets have a row of bones which are very easy to remove, whiting fillets have no bones.

    Avoid sea bass, sea bream .
    Again, your local fish monger is a wealth of information, and will always help you.

    Don't just go with the expensive ones either, a lot of fish is much less expensive cos it's less well known

    I am with you mate - but funnily enough I love tuna which is probably the smelliest strongest tasting fish of all.

    I have often wondered would being hypnotized work ?
