Morning! I am a newbie to this site, have never posted before, although I do read it regularly.
So ... I am just looking for a little bit of advice, I am female and 30, recently joined a gym and I am really enjoying it. I was wondering though, are there any supplements or protein drinks I should be taking to maximise my workouts?
I am not training for anything in particular, and not really looking to lose weight, just tone up and increase my fitness.
Sorry if this is a little vauge, I gues I just dont really know what exactly I need to ask!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi and welcome,

Don't worry about asking questions. If they're vague, another poster will prob ask you a question to clarify what you're after.

As a general rule, you don't need to take meal replacements (protein supplements) if you can get your food in order.

Can you list out a typical day's diet and what your current exercise regime is? Then we can help you maximise it.

    Hi Colm,
    Thanks for the reply!
Currently I do yoga a couple of times a week, I jog on the threadmill for 30 mins or so, I do spin once a week, and other than that I walk(every other day) or play tennis(maybe once a week).
My diet can be very varied as in my job I dont tend to get allocated lunch breaks so it can be a case of grabbing a sambo or wrap when I can, to be honest I dont have the best diet, I know I am very bold. So thats why I was think that at least if I dont get enough protein from my food, maybe I should be getting it elsewhere??

    Hi BR

Like Colm I would not recommend blindly taking supplements if you can get your required nutrition from whole foods.

Could I suggest that you could try keeping a food dairy for a few days/a week. Jot down everything that crosses you lips, foods & liquid.

Then have a look and see if you are deficient in protein, eating too much carbs etc. Then you can try and make changes to what and how you eat to balance out your diet. At this point you would be in a better position to ascertain whether you should/need to add supplements to your diet.

The only supplements I would recommend everybody taking from the start is a good quality fish oil and a good quality multi-vitamin.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    Best Regards,

    M

    Second the training diary.

I use the maximuscle diary and find them really useful for both cardio and weights.
