Mobile Broadband

    Hi all

i have a couple of questions, and would appreciate any help on that matter.

I need mobile broadband access, and i currently own a dell v13, with dell hspda mobile card inside, Dell 5530. (with windows 7, i needed to use dell 5540 drivers - anyway, i have the guide to install it somewhere that if anybody would like to have, i can link to).

    anyway, here's my issue:

I have a Three pay as you go sim inside and ive been meaning to use 3 data pay as you go, which can be 250mb for 5 euros or 15euros for 10gb for a month. i dont mind that, i need pay as you go as i dont always need it (And dont want to be in a contract).

My problem is i connect to three all right, but for some reason, invariably, it says connected but no internet access after some time. it works for 1 minute, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, but at some point this happens and the only way to get it to work again is to disconnect, connect again. sometimes i need to restart my laptop for it to work.

i remember when i had a Huawei mobile dongle E220 - used to have the same problem. i have full 4 bars of signal, and speed is fine once im connected.

what annoys me is the dropout of access, even though there is signal and it says connected.

    Therefore:

    1. does anybody have the same issues?
    2. is there another provider that might offer the same nice broadband pay as you go deal but without that much dropout?

    Thank for all the info

    Similar problem maybe?

3G iks inherently unreliable, especially if you're at the edge of a sector, or in a particularly busy sector. It does sound particularly bad for you and the posters in the other thread there.

I had the same probs with no internet, bars or no bars, you are probably in a marginal to no coverage area, I was with 3 for 18 months and developed these probs, I found out the network was overcrowded so I was not gettin online.

    I changed to brisknet.

only advice try a different broadband provider, cos 3 are useless.

    hope this helps....:D

If restarting the laptop fixes the problem it is not a network issue, restarting the laptop has no effect on the network, there is a configuration problem somewhere. Is it possible that the dell card is faulty or something is conflicting with it to cause the disconnection.
Is there anti virus on the laptop that could be some way blocking the connection? Try removing it and see does it stop the problem, i'd also do a sim exchange just in case there could be a fault there.

its funny to think of it. i thought i had full coverage (as i had 4 full bars) and the connection would refuse to happen. after 2-3 times connecting and disconnecting manually to shake the broadband into action (thats why the restart re-sorted it), it came to a point where even though there is signal, it would not connect, and windows was unable to come up for a reason.

a couple of times now, 3 has popped up as roaming in my connection manager, and surprise surprise, it actually connected fine, albeit slow. its 4 full bars on the roaming bit.
    however it says type: UMTS

so it seems that it will connect when roaming but unable to find a proper 3 signal? and im on a main road and its annoying.

on the other hand, i have a mobile phone on 3 in the same room, that consistently shows me 3 bars of 3g access (and not 2g roaming).
so i guess the issue is the amount of signal im receiving. (and i just very recently topped up by 15 euros to get the 1gb data, what a waste!).

i guess im going to have to look at another mobile broadband provider.

apart from 3, does anybody know who would be the best value for money?dont need that much data, but ive come to realise i do need more than 250mb and the longer that data lasts, the better, for the cheapest available, and on pay as you go as i dont want to be tied in a contract and have the same hassle again.

    thanks

I always had 2 bars on mine and although I was nearly always able to connect, I could not always load up google. I tried a speed test on my 3.6mb modem and it timed out 2 out of 3 times upload speed was about 15kb download was 25kb. I would have got a reply from google quicker by post. I was able to download movies 6 mts ago. 3 tec support put it down to overcrowding in my area and said I should try using it at off peak times and/or put dongle out the window. btw, I had it out there already.

    check your coverage map http://www.three.ie/products_services/coverage/index.htm

94% covered Out and about Id say only 50% Indoors mainly in bigger towns

    try o2 or vodafone
they do a 14 day free trial still I think

    Hope you get sorted.....;)
