Sky menu on screen, but don't have Sky!

While viewing RTÉ 1 the main Sky menu keeps popping up every few minutes, as well as the on screen tab saying what's on now and what's on next on RTÉ 1.

But the thing is we don't have Sky, or even a satellite, and never have had. Why would this be happening?

This would be because RTÉ are using backup satellite feed while doing work at the transmitter. This has happened before this year, probably all the DTT upgrade work or something like that. One of the more technical posters can give ya the exact technical explanation.

    Which transmitter?
It's an awfull shame they don't put on one of the movie or sports channels or UTV or BBC one..

Yes they are using a sky feed for RTE.
Mullaghanish is on and off air all week so I'm guessing some of it's relays are using satelite as back up.

Around 4 o'clock they put on some Sky promotional channel (998?) for a minute or two before switching back to RTÉ2! It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

They have a €1.5M plan to fix it, in Q2 2011. The Skyboxes will be gone.

Can you imagine when RTE ring to cancel the sub with sky?

"So why to you want to cancel? You realise when you cancel you won't get any channels?" She says..
"Erm we bought our own Transponder" He says.
"My you did have a lot of holiday homes!" she replies "What if we we let you keep all of them at Multiroom Rate, will you keep the sub then?"
"Can you change the name and bank details on the account then?" He asks...

Where in the country are you seeing this ?

    It's in Galway.

A message saying that my imaginary sky box was about to go into standby was up for a few minutes just there on RTÉ 2. This is ridiculous!

Any word on which satellite they'll use?

happened a good few times in the midlands, we still receive BBC1,2, UTV and CH4 from a deflector, must be just relaying a sky digital signal. feckin DTT trials keep knockin out my BBC2 on analogue too!!!

Are you using an aerial or are you on a cable system?

If aerial do you know what direction the aerial is aimed (if not the transmitter location) ?

I was in Enniscrone in Co. Sligo for a week there and the house we stayed in was receiving RTÉ ONE and RTÉ TWO from a Sky box and quite regularly the EPG came up or a message about auto-standby. What was worse is that it was set to 4:3 too!

The house could also receive BBC ONE, BBC TWO, UTV and Channel 4 but BBC ONE was in 16:9 whereas the rest were in 4:3 centre cut out. Now and again RTÉ ONE and RTÉ TWO switched between 4:3 cut out and 14:9 letterbox. It was a very weird set-up. The local deflector has been badly set up!
