It's probably safe to say Justin's time with Limerick has finished.

Who will get the job? Creegan was a top manager imo and very unlucky in his last spell with Limerick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭cremeegg

Ger Loughnane would be the man...

Gary Kirby would be my man - was a strong influence when he was selector with Richie Bennis. Fellas like Steve McDonagh, Ciaran Carey, Mike Houlihan and Dave Clarke should be involved with some of the underage teams to help pass on their experience. Limerick are a proud hurling county and have a good All Ireland pedigree without winning the Holy Grail.

Doubt if Loughnane would do it. Anyway his record with Galway was dire

He wasn't unlucky he just made a hash of it!

Not sure agree with you about Creegan and he won an All Ireland with Offaly

No way to Loughnane as manager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭cremeegg

loughnane could bring out the best in them.. so hes record was patchy in galway but less expection this time.. and hes price wouldnt be as bad after galway.. you could prob get him for 50K this time...

Not loughnane's fault that Galway are as soft as fcuk. They just didn't want to put the work in for him and their 2 best hurlers spent months cryin about the treatment they got from Loughrea. Even Cody would find it hard to win an AI puttin up with that.

Think the next manager will be a Limerick man. Maybe Tony Considine might have a chance from his time with Garyspillane.

Deccy ... a tad harsh really ... coming from a clare person who recently got humilated by the might of dublin...

Even though he is a Clare man Loughnane would be a class coach to bring in.But we now need a Limerick man at the moment to steady the ship after all the crap that has gone on in the previous months! We need to do what Justin was trying to which was mixing youth with the likes of Reale,Hickey,Murray.I think we need to make the team competitive again and in future when we want to move to the next level then we should consider Loughnane,Donal O'Grady etc..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭klong

Not an expert by any means on Limerick hurling, but surely there's no point considering Loughnane or O'Grady etc unless you think they'd want the job? The Limerick County Board could offer Cody the job but would he want to take it on (and I know full well Cody hasn't resigned the KK job expecting the LK job...)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 850 ✭✭✭pajoguy

Im sure it probably will be a limerick man this time.......assuming they don't reappoint Justin which they surely cant.... Can they?

    Gary Kirby...
    Ciaran Carey....
Eamonn Cregan.... with the above onboard?
Pat Herbert and get him to get shaughs involved with the youngfellas???

Dont slate me they are only thoughts on Limerick men..

    Outsiders....
    John Allen,
    Donal O'Grady,
    Ger Loughnane,
    Davy Fitz,
    Pat Fleury,
Cyril "Game on Now Ger" Farrell!

All I hopr is that the last 12 months can be put to bed.
Looking forward to next years munster already!:D

Not all that harsh really, Galway have had the ''all style, no substance'' tag for a while now. Loughnane tried to instill some bit of ''steel'' into them and they downed tools. Gave out bout training methods and the fact that he only had 1 galway person on his backroom team.
Just sick of listenin to ex galway hurlers and the galway public tryin to run ger loughnane down by blaming him.

And as for the childish dublin comment, its a very young team some of whom have not even developed fully physically yet. I'd reserve judgement on that team for a couple of years yet cremeegg!!

Anyway i think it'll definetly be a Limerick man to manage them as they will be reluctant to trust an outsider after the justin reign.

There was and is only one man for the Limerick job. His name is Tom Ryan. The only man to ever get the best out of a group of Limerick players. His reward for winning 3 major trophies in 3 years?.....to be interrogated and treated like $hit by Limerick County Board before being dismissed in 1997 without as much as a thank you.

If not Tom Ryan, then Richie Bennis, with Kirby, Houlihan and Clarke as selectors.

I'm fully aware he won it with Offaly, I had the horror of being there to witness it first hand.

Winning the All-Ireland with Offaly has nothing to do with Limerick however.

In his second stint with Limerick (1998-2002) he inherited one of the strongest squads in the country but he only went and got rid of most of them over the first few years of his tenure. Players like Mike Houlihan, Mike Nash, Dave Clarke, Frankie Carroll and a few more were cast aside when they still had 2/3 years left to offer. Mike Nash in particular was treated badly and Gary Kirby should have been handled differently too.

Apart from 2001 his reign was a failure, and he made an awful mess of things in 2002 when he lost the plot over the dual player issue. He has already had two failed stints with Limerick, it would be madness to give him a third!

Does my heart good to read this. :) The sooner they get rid the better. My fear was McCarthy would still be in charge in 2012 when we'd probably be in Division 3 and be on a 27 match losing streak. I don't care who gets the job really so long as somebody new does come in.

Interesting to see Allen's name in there but I think it's time to stay within the county.

I agree... but there is two sides, would someobody outside with no connections ect be better? But then that didnt work with Justin

I think out of that list Gary Kirby, and bring Carey on board with him

I agree 100% with jordainius on not giving the job to Eamon Cregan. A fantastic servant to Limerick hurling yes, but he failed in two previous stints. His handling of some players was appalling e.g. Gary Kirby, Dave Clarke.

We have to keep it inside Limerick this time. Would love to see Richie Bennis back. His enthusiasm for the game is wonderful to see. My favourite line ever from any aftermatch interview is attributed to Richie - "Dan the Man got none and we got five" :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭flutered

the jungle drums in the south has been mentioning tj ryan since the spring, check out my earlier posts, what is required is some one with steel who will tell the players when he says jump all that will be heard is how high, j. mc carthy was finished after the qualifier against wexford last year, when he had a training session arranged in wexford @ 11am the morning after the game and only 3 turned up, that is when both he and the county board had to act not dither.

in all fairness wtf was he having training the morning after?lads are entitled to a few pintss after winning a game

this is why we have never won nothing, disipline is required from players, a few pints and you can train, any more and you cannot, when kerry win a quarter or simi final in dublin they have a drink on the train, thats it once they are off the train they are off the drink, go down around kilkenney, ask how many of the squad drink, it is the same in almost every county, what the hell had they to celebrate after beating wexford ? .

so your saying that they can have one pint?get a grip, they are well entitled to go out after a game...dont be fooled that kerry or kilkenny dont either, they will go out the night of a match unless there out the following week and go for a good few and go off it again til their next match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭flutered

the above post is a pointer to what is wrong with hurling in limerick, no self disipline, one cannot drink and compete, one cannot eat every kind of junk and compete, the first requirement of any coach in any sport is people who want to play, not people who like to play. regardless of what players think if a training session is organised then it makes sense that they turn up, when a drinking session takes precidence over a training session then all is lost.

these lads train from december all the way through to the summer...are you telling me that they cannot let off a bit of steam after winning a championship?

have you seen them train, what championship have they won that they need to let off steam over, wake up o.p. times have changed, knowlege of different training schedules have upgraded, how come some of our universitys now have a curriculum called sports science, the reason, it is a science, the only compitions won in pubs are darts and pool, another reason that hurling is so weak in limerick is lack of proper coaching in our primary schools.

it happens in every county after a championship match,do you think the rosscommon footballers went to a tea party last weekend?their well within their right to enjoy themselves after winning a match, get real,i play myself,i train hard but when the match is over and we win and dont have a game for a few weeks we will go for a few pints as a team and have the craic, there great nights too...great memories.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,174 ✭✭✭hardybuck

Having a few pints with your opponents is a key part of rugby, even at international level. After every international is a banquet, and you always see the top professionals on the sauce.

One tradition at the post match banquet is when there is a new cap, every member of both squads must buy him a shot. Fact.

Nothing wrong with a couple of scoops. The problem in Limerick was it didn't stop there.

just one question how many national titles have you team won.

what has that to do with my point?are you trying to say that if you go for a few pints after a match you wont win the next one.every inter county team go for a few pints after a match,go down to thurles tommorow night and i guarantee you all the tipp squad will be out enjoying themselves bar the u21s,they have to mix with eachother outside of the pitch aswell!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭flutered

thats it in a nutshell, bar the under 21s, you are begining to see the light not the bar.

but if the tipp team have a training session on monday morning more than 3 will turn up, also not much drink will be consumed,

Yes, until they win something they should hold off on the celebrations. The Limerick hurlers have won nothing, absolutely nothing, in over a decade, they are living proof you can't mix drinking with top level sport.

even on top level rugby, a lot of the guys who make it there don't drink much during the season. Guys like Stringer and O'Callaghan are teetotalers for example.

liam sheedy knows the score hes not going to call training for monday,he knows the effort they put on and he knows that going mout together is important aswell.

it is quite possible that j.mc carthy did not make that call, it may have been a fitness guy, a physio, calls such as that are made for the good of the squad, a lot of that squad could not get hats big enough to fit, as them they had to send to texas for them,
please remember that they were been trained by the staff at u.l. thats the place where teams and individuals from most sports arrive to use all of their facilitys, if you know more about sports than the staff of u.l. then why are you talking gibberish on an internet forum.

    John Allen
Just reading his column in the Irish Times there. He said that he has been nominated but that he "won't be participating further in that particular contest".

but he may not be on the shortlist, i.m.o. there are guys on that list that would not train guys to hurl spuds from ducks.

Thinking about it I reckon a lot of potential managers would be put off by the inept individuals in charge @ County Board level.

Gary Kirby I believe is to be the new manager.
