Should the Greens/DCC impose a total private car ban in the Dublin city centre for the use of pedestrians and cyclists, ie Dame St., The Quays, O'Connell St., Nassau St., and from Portobello Bridge into town! These are just a few examples. More welcome!:D

I love how practical this idea sounds, especially when you take Dublins grade A public transport system into account...

I live within that area... what would you propose for people who own cars in that area?

    Well obviously a permit system!
The idea is to only allow public transport use the roads in those areas, to reduce traffic congestion and increase Bus frequency, also reduce CO2 emissions in the City centre. To make Dublin city centre a greener, cleaner place to walk and cycle around! Can you imagine it.

Before someone says use a Congestion charge to control usage, NO total ban for everyone. Not just for the poor, who cant afford another usage tax.

So not a total ban then? There are 1000s of private cars in that area, so it can't be pedestrianised like Grafton street and would have to be open to local traffic.... pointless and a nightmare to police.

Explain what you think would work.....

I never suggested Pedestrianisation of the City Centre just banning non commercial traffic, with permit passes for the 1000's of private car owners in the city centre, "1000's I think not!" from it for the greater good and enjoyment of the City. Goods vehicles can use it like they do other area's between 6am-11am. The only vehicles needed in the City centre are Public transport, buses and taxis!

And what? Just fcuk the commuters and the retailers without a proper public transport system? Absolutely not, horrendous idea.

You exluded them, so I can only assume an AGS member will have to leg it to a crimescene or an ambulance person will have to walk with a stretcher and his kit to some apartment where an old lady has fallen?

Are you possibly a supporter of the Green party?

They have a habit of coming up with ideas which stand to make life that little bit harder.

There's an argument for and against. I feel strongly that the city has a large population which is sometimes overwhelmed by traffic.

I reckon motorists need relief roads around the city centre. Some buildings should be knocked and streets better laid out to accomodate the new relief roads.

God knows what the Looney raving mad nutter party Green party might impose on us over the next couple of years. They know they'll never be in government again so they are in an awful hurry to pass loads of this sh!te over the next 18 months.

Anway define Dublin City Centre , O' Connell street doesnt really matter because theres nothing there , neither do the quays. What would be the point and wheres the alternative anyway.

The suburbs, Phibsboro, Rathmines etc... then use public transport or those lovely pay as you go DCC bicycles. Im only suggesting the Inner city centre for now, like the 30km/h zones. Im a motorist, whats wrong with restricting the city centre, you have the rest of the country to drive around!

My favourite thing about the militant cyclists victory (yes those guys who pay no road tax, VRT, tax of fuel, etc) with regard to the new 30kmp/h speed limit is that I have been driving around Dublin City Centre with impunity at 70km/ph, once with a garda car behind me.

What about people who are disabled? They wont be using the DCC bikes. Dont even bother trying to tell me that Dublin Bus could even handle that amount of passengers. I think your in a bit of a fairy world tbh.

You'd be restricting access to people doing business in the city also. Buggerd if I'd bring home a TV or whatever on bus eireann.

Permits like there is for parking for such people. Of course Dublin Bus could handle it, they do as it is. Also all the extra revenue from the use of public transport, would pay for extra services in time.

    Oh this is a wind-up :D:D:D:D

I presume you've researched this in depth and have discovered other parts of the country , also in need of suchh traffic measures , where you could impose such conditions.

Ah look lad , selll this stuff in the greenybin , you really are just jumping on the " Down with four by fours " band wagon without a whole pile of knowledge about what you are preaching. Sorry but I just cant take you seriously .

Ahh yes so there isnt massive crowds at bus stops and crowded bus's.

Have you used public transport in the last decade?

I think you've gone to far and blown the charade, On yer bike son. :pac:

most of this guys posts seem designed to infuriate - i remember his stance on speeding and speed limits.

Anyhow Jock, I don't think there should be a ban on cars in DCC.
There should be a ban on people who want to ban cars.

I think evnetually. Its not that big a city and it has the bus, train, luas system etc. Cant see why you'd need to even drive into dublin considering the transport system there but it would obvisouly need to improve vastly before you could rely on it.

London is doing it the right way, charge people. Should surely reduce the traffic atleast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,430 ✭✭✭RustyNut

No way, as a cyclist there is nothing I like better than playing with the traffic in the city center its just fun. :D:D:D

Why should taxis be allowed unto the city centre and ordinary motorists not?

Also, can you imagine the traffic on the paremeter of this exclusion zone, it'd be madness

we should have a service like european countrys ,in germany you dont wait a half hour to 40 mins for a bus you wait a max of 15 mins .more busses, more jobs,a little bit happier irish people.when that happens id have no problem to have a ban in the city ,and have the permit thing for people living in there

we just need to get rid of the robbing taxis then 15€ to get to town

which comes first - clearing the roads so the public transport system can operate efficiently, or providing an efficient public transport system on extremely congested roads, to then facilitate restricting car access?
