Mazda 6 estate diesel

Hi all. I have been doing a fair bit of research re buying a new car. Currently have a Volvo S40, old one, and NCT coming up. I want to have a backup plan if it fails the NCT with anything costly. Have been looking around various car review sites and the Mazda 6 Estate Diesel (either of the two models) look like great buys. Looking for a 100% reliable family car, preferably something that is nice to drive as well as practical.

If an MPV, not an obnoxiously big one. Advantage of the MPV, as I see it, over an estate, is the extra boot size & flexibility re additional seats or seat removal, and the higher profile for access & visiblity.

We have two kids under 5, and one more on the way. I'm keen on diesel, only do low mileage around town, maybe 5 trips > 100kms per year.

So anyone got any comments on my current favourite. Am thinking of going up north or over to UK to get a higher spec for the same money if I see that there is good value in doing so. No other cars area really doing it for me, I suppose the Toyota Verso would be up there on the list but think the Mazda pips it for looks & nice drive.

Avoid the Mazda 6 2.0 litre diesel, it is a disaster of an engine for reliability with large repair bills. Ask Galwaytt about his one.

Thanks for that Bazz. I looked at some of the threads on here that galwaytt has contributed to. What I'm still not clear on is whether the 2.2 diesel engine has resolved the issues with the pump/diesel engine. Though it is probably not on the market long enough to know for sure. If anyone knows for sure that the new 2.2d engine has issues I'd love to know. Thanks.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I'm very same situation as the OP from 2010. Looking to get 2013/14 Mazda 6 Estate 2.2 Diesel. Would only do about 20k a day on average with a few big drives(100k+) throughout the year. Are the diesel engines from 13/14 known to have issues? Really like Mazdas as have been driving a Mazda 3 1.6l petrol for nearly 6 years now with literally no trouble at all. Any alternatives for decent estate cars with about 15k budget?

Diesel with your mileage profile could be troublesome!

The 1.2TSI is surprisingly drivable. Never quick, but easy to make progress and get up to motorway speed. Also appears to be v.reliable.

I'm told that the newer in house Volvo diesels are more suitable for urban driving than most, if you're willing to stretch your budget a bit for something like this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201704284880102

Only driving 20km a day, you really should be looking at petrol cars.

Yes true, seem most if not all decent estate cars are all diesel though. Might have to look into another type of care altogether so.

Thanks they look really interesting and within budget. Would it be a bad idea to get a Vauxhall or the Volvo D2 seeing as there would be so few in Ireland?

If you're planning on keeping the car more than 3 years, I wouldn't worry overly about depreciation. The market for largeish estates in Ireland is fairly poor anyway.
