    Hi,
just wanted to see if anyone knows a cheap alternative to living at home?
Have a empty field that would be perfect for maybe a log cabin or something.
I could afford anything up to 30k max. need something thats warm with a good bit of space for 2 people. Don't really fancy a mobile home they look abit tacky. Any suggestions would be great :)

Personally, I would love to build a fortress up the side of a mountain and cut myself off from this this idiot infested island.

To that effect, I looked into this a few years ago and there are prefab houses that can be built which are pretty good. A friend of mine build a two room + bathroom hut in his parents back yard and it's lovely so yes, it can be done. Here's a link:

I don't know what the planning laws are but remember, it's not just a case of building a house, you need electricity, plumbing, sewage so this isn't a simple thing. Good idea though.

Dont know why you posted this in Politics. Get a mod to move it to Accomodation & Property.

Have you looked into getting a timber frame house?

Afraid not. The closest thing I could show you would be this:

He hasn't got the sliding doors but inside he has a living room, a bed room and a decent sized bathroom with a shower. I've been in there in the dead of winter and it's pretty cosy which I assume is down to the smaller size of the building.

What he did do though was link his electricity and plumbing to his parents' house so that kept costs down. It's a pretty cool little home for a single guy on his own and I' wouldn't mind having one myself. You'd need to check out about planning permission though which in this country is a can of worms.

    wow thats nice.
did he do it all himself?
also did he jus buy a used prefab or a new one?
that's a great idea anyway would of loved to see a few pictures of it.
would you have any idea how much it cost him to do it all?

Moved from Irish Economy to Accommodation & Property. It's a discussion better placed there than on either the Irish Economy or Politics boards.

I'm not too sure of the detailed at all as I didn't see it being built. As to the cost, I think it was about 20k for the pre-fab and furnishings but remember, he was linking all the utilities onto his parents' house.

It looks alot like that prefab in the picture I linked but it's not in a forest or surrounded by trees, sadly :). It's a good idea, go for it if you can.

How about a shipping container or two? bang one on top of another, put a sprial staircase going from bottom one to top? that would be legend!

    I concur

nice big mattress + a gym membership for showering / workouts / toilet

Washing / storing clothes might be a problem but I still like the idea of this

a van would be taking things to an extreme IMHO. a mobile home would be prefect! that or a prebab.

Just came upon this thread. You could try Abwood, who import some Swedish cabins. There is also a company called Finnforest that do something similar.
