    Hi ,

I was wondering where could you get a workshop manual for a case international 885xl, or does anyone know where you could download the workshop manual from.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I have a case international 885xl, which i bought 10 years ago, When i bought it i had to get a mechanic out as it was sticking into gear, This was corrected by the adjusters on the the gear arm.

Now i am having problems getting it into low and high,

I removed the wheel and freed out the adjuster however the gear plates are not lining up when in neutral, i have to adjust the adjuster going to the high gear a cm or 2 past the point of the adjustment on the adjuster,

I rang a mechanic he was saying that there maybe be a problem with a fork in the gearbox to select the high gear, that a ball might have broken off, or some wear,

He was saying that if i take the hydraulic pump out i should be able to reach up this fork, Im not sure will i have to remove the cab and remove the gearbox cover to access this, Has anyone evry worked on these before, Will i be able to remove the fork from reaching up to it from the hydraulic pump.

Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks

eventhough I have fitted a pump to a 785 ( same set up) I cant remember if it's possible to reach the fork

    worked on a 885 lately
its possible to take the top of the gear box with removing the cab, afraid it's not a easy job

you need to disconnect the hydraulic pipes, all the hydraulic levers, the gear levers, pto pick up hitch etc etc., this will allow you to jack the rear of the cab about 5 or 6 inches , you need to take out the seat, the floor panel of the cab and loosen all the bolts on the top of the gearbox

you will have to lift the top c/w with hydraulic controls up a little and slide it back, be aware that this weights about 100 kgs and it is possible to do a lot of damage to the mechanism if it slipped

I done one last week (for a seal and bush on the lift arm) and was glad when I got it back together, I am not a trained mechanic but if I was doing it again I would seriously think of talking off the cab all together

    Thanks Snowman,

Ive being onto two case dealers, they are saying that i should be able to access the fork via the pump. I havent done anything before in this area of the tractor. Might give it to the dealer todo, hopefully the cab wont have to be removed, because it would be a pain, I have to do a ring gear on the flywheel on it first,

Hopefully it wont be to expenive with the dealers :-).

if you have to take off the pump, get a gasket kit when you are putting back it on.

these gaskets can fail if disturbed and give the symptoms of a faulty pump down the line.

Hi, I am in the same situation with my 885xl, stiff gear handles, having to take big handle out of gear to go from foward to reverse. I replaced clutch and pressure plate, replaced seals in master cyclinder, still no improvment.
this is a cry for help, some one got imformation from a mechanic that this is a fault with 885 gearbox. please help if you can as I have a fair bit spent

    You'll get manuals here...
I have one for our 885XL and DB996

They're OK, have used them for brakes and the clutch in the 996..

Hi, Did you try adjusting the gears underneath the tractor, The issue that was with mine was that the shaft going in from the plate H + R into gearbox was actually broke inside, And wasnt coming out of gear correctly when in Neutral. Got it fixed by a mechanic, There was quite alot of ripping in it, Even though it is repaired and alot better the gear change in the 885xl is not great, espically when you are trying to change between High and reverse. It worth ringing some case dealers and ask to speak to a mechanic for advice. they willl stear you in the right direction as to what to go look at next.

Do you have powershift on this tractor? When you clutch does it seem like the gearbox locks up and if your on a hill with clutch in it wont roll back?

That is exactly how it feels, it locks up as you say when clutched on a hill. Thanks for the reply.

Is the powershift not working right? and is the problem only there when powershift is on? It sounds to me like the powershift is not switching to low when you clutch. There are 2 switches that are operated by the clutch, the lower one prevents the tractor being started without clutching ,the upper one switches the powershift pack to low when you press the clutch, your problem may be with this switch.
Get a multimeter on this switch and test that its working. If it is working, the bracket the switch is on may be out of adjustment .Leave your multimeter connected to the switch, loosen the 2 bolts holding the bracket on,and adjust this bracket so the switch operates when you press the clutch.
Its tricky enough to do as its an awkward enough spot, you may have to loosen and twist the orbital pump pipes and loosen plastic dash surround,if you have digital dash take this out as it'll give better access and view of what you're at.
If the problem is not with this switch you'll be looking at the powershift unit which unfortunately is nowhere near as simple or cheap a fix.If the switch is the problem the easiest solution is to keep the powershift switch in low.To make sure it stays in low you could temporarily disconnect and isolate the wires at the back of the powershift dash switch until you get a chance to investigate the pedal switch.
Let me know how you get on.Best of luck.
