Hannon issues ground concerns for Canford bid
    By Racingpost.com staff 6:56PM 12 JUL 2010

RICHARD Hannon has warned that very fast ground could rule his Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Canford Cliffs out of the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 28.

Hannon has also stated that stablemate Paco Boy is likely to contest the Prix Jacques Le Marois next, while plans have not been decided for Dick Turpin.

The trainer said: "Canford Cliffs has got a bit burly, I'd say and he is going to need some work this week. We wouldn't want it very firm at Goodwood. We took him to France for the Morny and he came back jarred to hell. They hadn't put any water on and the ground was rough and firm.

"The hill didn't help him at Newmarket either but now he settles, he has a lovely turn of foot and has made up into a proper racehorse."

Hannon said there had been interest in Canford Cliffs as a stallion but he hoped he and Dick Turpin would stay in training another year whatever happens.

"Paco Boy will definitely run in the Jacques Le Marois and probably go to stud this year," the trainer said. "I'm not sure where Dick Turpin will go but I think he will get a mile and a quarter which will open up the entries slightly."

Hannon is aiming Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit at the Phoenix Stakes and Memory, who won the Albany and the Cherry Hinton Stakes, at the Moyglare Stud Stakes while at Goodwood he could field Zebedee in the Molecomb Stakes, Libranno (Richmond) and King Torus (Vintage).

Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin to stay in training
By Racing Post staff 4:35PM 20 JUL 2010

CANFORD CLIFFS and Dick Turpin will stay in training as four-year-olds, trainer Richard Hannon revealed on Tuesday.

The Group 1 winners are entered in the 1m Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 28, but Hannon is hoping to keep the pair apart for now.

Hannon said: "Both Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin will stay in training as four-year-olds.

"I think Canford Cliffs will handle Goodwood well - he didn't like the dip at Newmarket [in the 2,000 Guineas] but would not settle that day.

"The Sussex Stakes is going to be one of the highlights of the week and if we happen to get rain then Dick Turpin could run as well."

Canford Cliffs beat Dick Turpin by a length when they met in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month and has been quoted as a 4-6 chance with William Hill for the Sussex Stakes.

Hannon will have further decent chances at Goodwood next week with Zebedee in the Betfair Molecomb Stakes, Libranno in the Tanqueray Richmond Stakes, King Torus or Casual Glimpse in the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes, plus many more in the supporting races.

Among those singled out for a mention at a press day at Hannon's Wiltshire yard on Tuesday were the Queen's Free Agent, who could go for the 1m6f handicap on the opening day, Oratory in Wednesday's 0-95 classified stakes, Invincible Soul in Thursday's Turf TV Summer Vase Handicap, Vitznau, in Friday's Totesport Mile, plus the maidens Big Issue and Pausanias.

Hannon has entered star miler Paco Boy in next month's 6½f Prix Maurice de Gheest as an alternative to the following week's Prix Jacques le Marois, also at Deauville, should it come up soft.

He also confirmed the Moyglare Stud Stakes is the next target for recent Cherry Hinton winner Memory.

That's good news. I'd fancy DT to be a better four year old.
