I for one was ashamed of the so called supporters in Croker who attacked the ref.
we all felt bad about the result but their actions are not the answer.
I would like to see them charged by the Gardai and get a life time ban from gaa.
i would like some views on it please.

I've suffered worse getting off a bus at rush hour. If anyone's charged it'll have to be aggravated assault.

Life time ban from the GAA for anyone who attacked the ref, their actions are inexcusable, but I think the GAA have also to take a look at that particular ref. He is an idiot who has destroyed a fair few games before today.

    Absolutely, 100%.

Is it true that that's the same ref who did the 2002 Louth-Meath qualifier, that was also lost to a dodgy post-injury time decision?

What annoys me is that because this happens at a match that it will likely go un-punished yet if you or I carried on like that in town of a saturday afternoon / in the pub we would be hauled over the coals and be before a judge and have to cough up a hefty fine , and have our name and address printed in the local rags.

I don’t think so, in fact I’m really sure, think Id remember,
However ill stand corrected, but only if wrong

+1. Whoever they were they behaved like craven cowards. If they can be identified the harshest possible punishments should be doled out. For once I'm in agreement with Pat Spillane's post-match comments.

    Yes.

Just back from Drogheda and there is a lot of angry fans about, saw a few incidents between jersey wearing fans.

These people are fans - just more passionate than most. A lifetime ban from GAA is not enforceable in the slightlest so thats pointless.
As for charges, the first lad actually tried to punch the ref, but the rest just barged into him and as there were so many people on the pitch I reckon they'd use that as an excuse (or at least try to)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,588 ✭✭✭femur61

I'm from Kilkenny and not really a GAA fan at all but I can understand why people were angry. Both myself and my husband don't condone aggresive behaviour but I can totally understand why people reacted in the fashion they did. I can't beleive the ref didn't consult with others before he awarded the goal theres no smoke without fire, didn't he put two and two together when the whole team and fans were objecting to the so called goal.

Absolutely 100% they should be charged. Why not? He was assaulted a number of times. The GAA, RTE and various media should be assisting the Gardai in identifying the culprits and getting them charged.
The so called 'tradition' of invading the pitch after GAA matches, and not just finals, is partly to blame for this. How many GAA officials have been attacked/assaulted over the past few years in comparison to Soccer or Rugby referees?
It's extremely rare to see a pitch invasion in either of these sports and, in Rugby in particular, respect toward the referee is paramount.
It was a very poor decision and understandable that people would be upset and angry but this 'tradition' allowed the supporters to get close to the ref and assault him. Croke Park have to crack down now and multiply the stewarding by at least a factor of four until such a time as the supporters accept that they can no longer invade the pitch. Other sports have done so successfully so why can't the GAA?

I trust you've sued everyone who ever bumped into you on a bus or at a gig - assaulted:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Take off your blinkers man. He was assaulted, full stop.
How many of those so called supporters accidentaly bumped into him in your opinion??
Presumably from your tone you can see no wrong with was done to the ref.
The referee/umpire decision was wrong but could come under the banner of human error, those so called supporters though deliberately set out to accost the Ref and I have no doubt that he was in fear for his personal safety.

one or two have been arrested afaik

they will be charged, the more serious ones anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,140 ✭✭✭gipi

It was disgraceful - regardless of what happened at the end of the match, no official should have been treated as that ref was.

And don't forget, a steward was also hit with a bottle - someone who had absolutely nothing to do with what happened during the game.

First off, I haven't met a single Meath fan between full time and now who doesn't feel embarassed about the result and would fully support a replay.

I did speak to a man from Dundalk today who told me he knew 3 of the "supporters" who assaulted the ref and NONE of them would know one Louth player from another - total fair weather "supporters" that a life time ban wouldn't matter a jot to.

I've also heard stories of dust ups between fans around the county and of MH reg cars being damaged in a particular town.

    FFS lads, it's only a f*c*in' game!

I also know two of the THUGS.You'll never see them at a league match or an early Championship game.No louth fan can blame a Meath fan for the refs blunder.Hopefull it will blow over very quickly.

    It's disgraceful behaviour.

    They should of course be arrested and charged. Two guys in particular;

    scumbags.jpg

The first guy ran across the pitch and tried to punch the referee, the second guy repeatedly (three times?) ran at the back and sides of the referee and tried to knock him to the ground, using his arm/elbow to shove him.

Was also quite upset with the Garda effort. Only one Garda was in the centre of the action on time to be of any use, and even he seemed a little confused as to what to do. He either hadn't a clue where he was going, was hoping it'd settle down, or, most likely, was awaiting a series of other officers to join him.

Plenty of Gardaì seen standing at the barriers during the footage on RTÈ, which is grand, but there should have been a circle of Gardaì escorting this guy off the pitch.

Not really into GAA (and find it amusing to see all the Louth flags popping up around the neighbourhood from bandwagon jumpers) and didn't watch the match, but did see the 'goal' and was disgusted at the people attacking the referee.

I just heard that Sean Boylan got a punch in the mouth off a fella yesterday too. WTF? He was there as a supporter !

The sympathy is starting to wear thin now....

Pretty disgraceful stuff from the Louth fans. Yeah tensions were high but there's no need to go overboard like that.

A lifetime ban should be issued by the GAA. Happens in soccer. People get lifetime bans if they are caught doing something they shouldn't.

    Name and shame these people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 908 ✭✭✭Whiskey Devil

I doubt half of these tramps have ever been to a Louth match before. They're the same type of people who go to Drogheda/Dundalk soccer matches to kick the ****e out of each other. True 'Louth fans' should not be tarred with the same brush as these idiots. They are a tiny tiny minority of the Louth people who were in Croke Park on Sunday.

I think to prevent future occurrences they should address the level of competency of that particular referee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

Poor Sean Boylan ended up with a broken nose according to reports

A ref making a mistake doesn't justify any of that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 65516

it was terrable and i do feel sorry for the ref, i'm a huge louth supporter and i dont think people outside louth can really understand the frustration of what the ref has done to louth! we were HUGE underdogs no one expected louth to win after the meath preformance against dublin. for louth to win the match and then to go and give meath the lenster title after a goal that was clearly not a goal its just s unfair.

imagine it was dublin that had been cheated. that ref would be in hospital

Ermmmm:eek: look at the footage again.
Cop on. The people who went after the ref would spit in your face before they would ever go to a "soccer" match.Heres a case of GAA over Football snobbiness if i ever seen it.Rugby isnt far behind you:rolleyes:

I believe one of the people was actually going for a steward due to the fact his son has been struck.

    Open to correction!

just been in the High Court where a guy was awarded just under €50K ..... was being hit by another player during a game.

(I'm not gonna name names - but will most likely be in the papers tomorrow)

I didnt hear if there were any criminal proceedings previous to this but in most cases ...Criminal proceedings go before Civil proceedings ....so its more than likely the guy who hit the second guy - (probably) DIDNT get charged with assault.

I heard that too (disclaimer - is just rumour). I heard that his father was running on the pitch, his son was stopped by a steward and then something transpired to make the steward strike him. Apparently he is considering sueing Croker. This guy who I heard is actually on film attacking referee though

Sue Croke Park for what? Him and his son being retarded and violating the terms of their entrance by trying to get onto the pitch?

    Some people.

Unfortunately that is the culture that seems to be in this country these days. If it is true, it would be great if the ref countersued for assault through the civil courts.

The guy claiming this is the grey haired man with the moustache and he is clearly after the ref on the pitch.

He has since cut his hair short and shaved his moustache for fear of being recognised aroung his home town.

After ten years on boards I'm not gonna go trolling

I have heard that Sean was on a local radio station yesterday stating that it wasn't as bad a people have made out, again I didnt hear it so its only a "report"

    "Sean Boylan Assaulted"

That brought up a page full of links to various Gaa forums with people claiming to witness Sean Boylan having his nose broken. These are the reports* I was referring to.

Since he's been on Radio to deny that the search now brings up topics regarding that, as you'd suspect.

Where did I say I was starting rumours? I never claimed to have witnessed it or have any evidence of it, only that I had heard of it.

*reports may have been a bad choice of wording
