    hi folks,

I am thinking of buying my first civic . Its a 1996 1.4 Type R replica. It has 110 thousand miles. I havnt seen it in person yet until tomorow but from the pics it looks absoultly mint, but i just want to know what they are like basically. Thanks, diarmo111

Is it a proper replica with red carpets and recaros?

The 1.4's arent an incredibly fast car but nice looking, and handle well.. Youll have no trouble from a Honda really, the window regulators are a weak point in them so check them when you go see it.

Is there a link to the car anywhere where we could get a look at it?

Great little first car, so may options for them out there, its a car that can grow with you too, the engine is fairly bulletproof once looked after with servicing, lads in asia have gotten ALOT more power out of the 1.4 SOHC but trust me if modding the car keep it to mods that can be transfered to better engines dont waste money modding the engine just have fun with it as is.

To me thats a bit of a high asking price id rather pay less for a totally standard one and make it my own, but thats just me. good luck with what ever you decide and keep us posted

I'd have thought about half the asking would be right. I'm not being funny but in reality it's a 14 year old 1.4 car with 110k on the clock, it's not worth anything like 3k

I would of thought exactly this. It looks good and as projectgtr said, it'll be a great first car, but it's worth nothing close to 3k. You'd almost get a 96 Evo for that nowadays!

he said the rock bottom he would go is 2400 without the cd player which I can take out of my car. I am leaving the viewing till tomorw so that I can bring a mechanic along with me and if its alright and if he takes 2k cash then who knows!!!. I meant to ask earlier if its been reguarly servicerd and well looked after as he says it is what miles should I expect to get. I know its a "how long is a piece of string question" but usually how much, 150, 180k miles??

needs type r spoiler.clear indicators type r wheels, oem wings, honda badge moved, type r grill to even start to look like a type r rep

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭coronaextra

    price a bit steep,
its also running very low on huge alloys which could lead to problems down the road eg drive and gearbox problems. Test drive and make sure its not a bone shaker, check the wheels don't rub off the body work going over bumps etc.
Also it was resprayed? make sure it wasn't crashed.

Do usual checks service history, rust, etc.

shop around, its a buyers market out there at the minute

Wouldn't pay more than 1500 for it

I'd hold onto your cash for the time being dude, there's plenty of donegal spec type r replicas out there that pop up, Ive seen better examples for less money than the one you posted.

Dont be suprised to still see it for sale in a few weeks for lower than his current lowest price either.

If I was you i'd be looking at something like this - http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1423636 or another clean standard 1.4 and do the type R styling bits do it yourself, after all thats half the fun of modifying.

Just to give you a rough idea of prices, Front & rear Type R splitters can be got from €200 new, Type R splitter for €50, bound to find the spoiler for €200 secondhand, lowering springs €120,clear indicators €15 nice set of 15's €4/500 maby even less for all of the above if buying secondhand.

It'd still end up costing less than 2.5k for a 3 year newer and most likely better base to start on than the car your looking at, and again you get the enjoyment of modifying it to your own liking yourself!

Way too much for that car. 17's on a 1.4 civic how does it even move?!:D Been trying to sell a silver 00 for a while and i'm only asking 24 and that has original alloys and it's the one with coloured trim no nasty black plastic. I'd run a mile from these supposed replicas you'll only be laughed at and to me they scream that the person knows nothing about cars;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,391 ✭✭✭5500

Facelift was 99 alright but I just twigged there's a 98 spec rear bumper on it (rub strips on the sides) so possibly was replaced

Ya i noticed the prefacelift rear bumper and the facelift front bumper, but it was the front bumper that looked a different shade that threw me off, could of been a very early 99?

just to update ye lads I passed on the car. It was a good clean car but he wouldnt budge on the price so I said ill keep shopping around and i am kinda thinking now of buying a good standard car and doing it up my way.

Another quick question, jap civics are they a no-no, are the parts hard to get and pricy or are they sound out.

Most parts the same, engines are 1.3 or 1.5 instead of the the d14 engine we have here or then there's the ek4 sir which is a 1.6 b16a. The ek2 (1.3) models are usually badly spec'd with no airbag etc. Insurance might be higher because they're jap imports. If you're interested I have a silver 00 1.4 you can pm me.

I have an EK2 and it has airbag(s)
Insurance was no more than Irish one.

    1.3

I wouldnt really worry about parts if you find a decent one as they dont really give any bother.

Alot of them don't but then again some of irish/uk ones don't either.

    Why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,626 ✭✭✭✭vectra

    Why?
    Honda = Japan :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 480 ✭✭Conor_M1990

    Why?

The jap ones are tighter imo they also seem a bit faster they have Air con and full electrics standard the clocks are in kph the rear lights are cooler on the jap ones aswell

All in the head, a well looked after Irish example will be a better option than a Japanese one with an unknown history, they cant seem faster, its a 1.4 engine like not anything performance orientated, even if they were faster you wouldn't feel it.

The clocks in kph is no big deal and the extra's can be got in an Irish car if wanted.

Good move on leaving that car OP, get yourself a nice clean one like the blue one listed above and do the mods you want on it, you'll love it even more in the end if you do.

Most irish ones dont have history anyway and like the japs most have the ****e rallied outta them at this stage. I drove my old car and a 1.4 side by side and the jap one was deffo quicker like its by no means a rocketship but it felt slighter quicker then the Irish one My advice to the OP if he can insure one is get a 1.5 vtec much better job then a 1.4 or 1.3 and there meant to be easier on fuel

Usual Checks if there looked after feck all goes wrong with civics bring a mechanic If its clean and straight go for it. Id personally get the timing done again and get it serviced just for that bit of extra piece of mind but thats me
