Unlock iPhone 3GS running OS4 - How?

Hi Everyone, How do you go about unlocking the iPhone 3gs that is running OS4? I have read up about BlackRa1n etc. but the vibe im getting is that you have to have installed Cydia before ugrading to OS4 in order to be able to unlock it this way? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
