So I kept music on for JC and I was wondering as I just started the trumpet in first year will I have enough time to be good enough for the practical. My trumpet teacher says I am pretty good and if I kept it up I will be grand but will I be good enough for JC Practical.

If she thinks you'll be good enough then why are you worrying?

It doesn't really matter what grade you are it's how you perform it...

You can definitely do well if you've begun by 1st year. Don't worry about skill for the moment. If you love the instrument and just love playing music on it, the rest should come naturally for you. You'll do great. =D

oh god yes, don't let that put you off, i took up music in 5th year having never studied it (cos construction was crap) and got an A2 in honours, you'll be absolutely grand if you apply yourself even a bit!

To make it fair to students like yourself who start from 1st year; the standard expected for the practical is what a student would learn in 3 years of study and for leaving cert 5 years,, this would equate to a good grade 2 for JC. In theory you shouldn't be at any disadvantage in comparrison to a student who has done trumpet for 5 years in 1st year.

    Go for it

You'll be grand. I took up guitar in second year, wasn't very good going into my practical (just played basic three chord songs, thought I flopped it) and got a B in honours!

Ironically, I have improved drastically since the practicals and can now play much more complex stuff. Dang! =(
