    hey guys,

I'm new to boards. Doing this masters in September. Just wondering if anybody out there has done this course before or knows anybody who has and can tell me a bit about what it was like etc. Or anybody who is doing it this year.

    Cheers!

    Hey!!

I'll be doing it in September as well. I did Pharmacology in UCD and we covered some aspects of stem cell therapy in final year, which I found very interesting. REMEDI at NUIG is the place to do anything stem cell related in Ireland. From the course description and what one of my lecturers told me, it seems interesting enough and I'm looking forward to it (as well as moving out of home:D).

yeah moving out of home for the first time is fun until you've have a stressful day and there is no dinner waiting for you when you get home. but the benefits of living away from home far outweigh the bad stuff. the course looks really interesting now aswell cant wait!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I'd love to hear anything about this MSc. Especially if you know a list of modules for it? Thanks

Thanks for that. You hardly know anything more about that course? Also I think that list is from 2010 or so, is it out of date or still accurate?

The list is still accurate.Very interesting course and one of the more popular health sciences ones in NUIG.In the year I did it there were 90+ applications and only 18 places. If anything I think that demand has increased.Linda Howard is the course co-ordinator and makes the decision about who's is and who isn't.Perhaps send her an email to show your interest...

As for the course itself,it focuses on gene and stem cell therapies (duh!).The research project consists of 4-4.5 months in the lab, which is longer than alot of other masters. There are quite a few group related exercises such finding and presenting papers and group projects, which will definitely improve your presentation skills.

Oh and bear in mind that REMEDI will be moving to the new biology building in Dangan when it's finally complete,so if you're moving to Galway for the course then make sure to find accommodation nearer to the new building if it will be up and running by then.

Best of luck with the application if you decide to apply.

I graduated from the course in September 2011.Most of the class of 18 went to go on to do PhDs.About 6/7 of them are doing their PhDs in REMEDI.However,as funding is harder and harder to come by, don't just assume that there'll be a PhD for you in REMEDI when you graduate, although there is a good chance if you demonstrate that you're hardworking and passionate about what you do.Since it's a relatively small centre, these things don't go unnoticed..

Thanks for this information El Drago. I'm really looking forward to starting in September now! That's a lot of people doing PhDs, is there any reason you can see for that or is the course just of a high calibre?

Sorry ignore this. Just after seeing your edit. Thanks again

I actually have one or two more! The main one is how are the projects allocated and do you know if they are always relatively novel? I know in some subjects they just rehash out the same projects year in year out and this wouldn't be ideal obviously. And does every group within REMEDI offer one project or do only particular groups? Sorry, I have a few questions and didn't want to be annoying Linda Howard seeing as she is in charge and decides who gets in so I have to hassle an anonymous stranger on the internet. Story of my life!

During my year projects were allocated by assigning a number in order of preference for 5 projects from a list of 25ish.You would be allocated the project that was highest on you preference list compared to the rest of the class. If there was a clash with somebody else's list you either (a) stepped outside the building and sorted it amongst yourselves like gentlemen (unfortunately this never happened :(), or (b) flipped a coin. This year one particular project was very popular amongst several candidates and mini-interviews were held.I still think that approach (a) would've beenthe best (and most entertaining) to determine who "really wanted it" :P

Based on my year and what I've seen this year, most but not every group within REMEDI had at least one project on the list. From what I can recall, although there were some projects that had bumpy starts (a few that weren't within REMEDI),in the end everyone was moved to REMEDI and seemed relatively happy with their projects.Like anywhere, you could say that a few supervisors did rehash the same projects year after year, but for the most part they seemed like they had been thought out for the incoming student.

    Hey guys,

Anyone else starting this course in September? I'm looking to get in contact with people to share accomodation with.

Leaving my current full-time job to go back to college (madness, I know)..so I'll need to get myself some part-time work too. Anyone know if there's any sorts of positions in the college in clinical research?? (data management or such). Failing that, is part-time work hard to come by in the city?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Hey, I'm starting this in September too. I'm also looking into the possibility of sharing accommodation, and I guess it'd be good to share with someone from the course.

I've never had a problem finding part time work, but the problem often is that employers may not be overly flexible in their hours some places like Dunnes', Tesco and McDonald's will take on people after summer only employees have left. Unfortunately I don't know anything about jobs in the college.

I'm going to give this thread a small bump. Is there anyone else out there accepted into this MSc? If you have been would you be interested in sharing accommodation?

    Hi everyone,
Hopefully this is still being used but I was wondering if people who have done the course could help me out. I'm looking to do this course and I was hoping people could tell me what its like? What do you have to do for the personal statements as well as do both references have to be academic?
    Cheers for any help.

    Hi Wally,

Both myself and Dropping_Bombs are doing this course at the moment, and EL Drago at the start of this thread has also completed the curse. His/Her description of the course is fairly spot on with what we've done so far. It is heavily based around stem cell biology and gene therapy, which is great if you have the interest in it. There's a lot of paper-reading and research to be done by yourself to keep on top of things. The scientific writing module as part of it is great for giving you a new look-in at how to write properly also, which should come in handy in the future. To be honest, if you have the interest and passion for it then you should have no problem.

I can't remember what I did about my references now, but I think they were academic...I applied way back in early March, so this isn't as clear to me anymore. You could email Linda Howard about your potential interest in the course and ask her, she is very nice and helpful, and will get back to you as soon as she can.

If you want you can PM me any questions about the course, I could send you on my personal statement template if you'd like to have a look. I did have a couple of beers when writing mine now, it helped loosen the mental tongue haha.

    Hi,
I'm considering applying for this course. Does anyone know where people have found employment after finishing the degree? I'm aware that the majority of graduates have gone on to do phds but I would be more interested in finding out what the employment opportunities are like afterwards.

    Hi,
I was wondering if any of you could tell me what date this course commenced on in previous years?

    Thanks.

This sounds like the kind of thing you should know before applying.

I have friends who've done the course and gone on to do PhDs, mostly in the same lab they did their research part of the MSc in.

Some profs will have connections to industry or their own spinouts that you might be able to join. Ask around or do some research and find out.

So I did this course 2 years ago now. Out of a class of 18, 10 are doing PhDs, 2 are working as research assistants, there was 2 medical doctors, and the rest are all working in Industry. In my experience this MSc. is a fantastic set up for a PhD. Feel free to ask questions if you have them.
