a Tornado? For a manhunt? Sounds mad to me...

Helicopters capable of flying at night and with all that thermal imaging technology sound more appropriate for the job than an "all-weather attack aircraft" (quote from the RAF website http://www.raf.mod.uk/equipment/tornado.cfm)

Can a yoke like that really fly low and slow enough to spot a man on the ground, or am I showing my ignorance of all things aviation once again: :D

Here's a link to a story from the Sun announcing a Tornado was used in the manhunt:

He's built like a tank ... he's got blondish mohekan Hair and wearing a bright orange fecking t-shirt..... ???? Who needs a tornado .. helichoppers .. dogs .. and an army of police... the man was seen in B&Q for gods sake! Does he have a fetish for orange or something???? He cant be that hard to find! He's probably hiding out in a mates wardrobe eating cheese and onion crisps and drinking a cans of Iron Bru...

Talk about using a sledge hammer to crack an egg.

A thermal imaging chopper and a couple of trained siffer dogs would do a better job.:p

Not really. The area that they are trying to cover and the type of terrain is very difficult. Yes they can, and are, using helicopters but they take time to cover the vast areas that they think this man is hiding. The Tornado GR4 that they are using is using a reconnaissance pod that can map a vast area very quickly and then flying over the same area and computers can detect the smallest of movements over the two passes.
