anyone heard the ads on the radio for renault garages offering a service to any car brand for 99 euro - anyone got their car done there - happy? or alternatively can anyone recommend a reasonably priced service in dublin area?

Oil and filter change and a quick undercar check, it won't be a full serice.

Their hardly gonna do a major service that costs a lot more in parts for that price. 99 is still an ok price for an oil and filter change.

Many people assume that a "service" is the same thing everywhere you go when in fact it isn't.

No matter what garage you go to always get a itemised list of what they do during the service. Study it, filter out the micky mouse stuff like "check wiperblades" (you can check that yourself) and compare it against what others offer. Only then can you see a) if what they offer is worth the expense and b) who offers the best value.

Same. Dont bother. The one I did a few years back seemed to be an excuse to find more problems that needed a more expensive service.

There is a place in Newbridge that does oil+filter change for 59e, so no point to pay 40e for checks you can do by yourself anyway.

Exactly, and the price will not include new parts like Brake pads, wiper blades, filters etc... also it will depend on the car, Diesel, engine size etc...:(

On average a full service including parts generally will cost you 200ish quid. So if you have a good trusted mechanic stick with him!:)

Anyone who expects anything more than a basic service for €99 is kidding themselves.

For €99 Id expect oil change, oil filter change, air filter changed, maybe spark plugs, wipers, various fluid levels checked, washer bottle filled and bulbs checked. All of which shouldnt take more than an hour and the various parts and consumables shouldnt cost much more than €50 (the parts for my last service came to €100, and thats including nearly €50 for NGK spark plugs and decent oil).

Anything beyond that like brake pads is asking a lot considering parts alone would push the price way beyond €100.

I do my own servicing on my car, sure you could do it yourself for about 20 euro if you wanted, but I like to go for the premium oils.

But 100 euro is an ok price for someone that lifts the bonnet once a year, and 59 is even better.

Using OEM oil and filter, the same thing costs me €30.

Any monkey could change the filter and drop the oil, But i would not be calling that a service.

Good advice. Do you mean get the list of what they would do in a full service before they carry out any work or get the list after and say "No, not paying for wiper checks"?

They didn't do the work they claimed they did.
They told me that they had checked the brake pads and they didnt need replacing, but pads were actually worn and should have been changed.(I was expecting to pay extra for this, and was surprised when they said that they were ok)

It turned out that they had damaged the locking nuts so badly that they couldnt be removed with the key.

So as a customer experience goes, it couldn't have been much worse.

Every 2nd service on my car is just oil and filter. General inspection, rotating tyres etc, costs nothing. I could pay €160 to a main dealer for exactly the same thing.

This is a major problem in Ireland. People think their car has been serviced after an oil change.

I am living in the UK and when a car is advertised as FSH (Full service history) it will literally have the dealer stamps, miles and dates noted. Irish sellers tend to skimp on everything, never spec their cars properly and stretch their budget to a car they can ill afford to run.

Most modern cars every 2nd service is just an oil and filter change and general inspection.

Obviously you do it before agreeing to let them service your car. T'would be fairly silly to blindly enter into any contract without knowing what you'll get out of it, wouldn't it

By the way, you missed out on a question mark. :p

Spec oil for my car costs €10/l and it takes about 6l, the oil filter is another €15, so that's €75 for parts only. Most people would gladly pay €24 for the labour, so all-in-all I'd say it's not a bad deal at all, even if it's not a "proper" service.

    What oil is that?

A lot of BMW owners seem to think the only oil they can use is Castrol whereas they can use any LL04 spec oil, and there are several.

yep, i was buying a litre of castrol for my E90 in my local factors and he told me i can have the same spec oil for half the price, but i had to stick with the castrol as thats what went in at the last full oil change at the dealers.

when doing a full change myself i stick with the cheaper oil but to the same BMW spec ie. LL04.

Not to mention not garage them so they're damp and mouldy, stretch the interval between services to about 20k miles, drive the sh*t out of them, have the paintwork scratched to sh*t, half the interior bits broken or missing, mirrors held together by masking tape, alloys warped, never check the oil or tire pressure, then give them a quick valet and sell them on at way above the list price and when asked "has this car been regularly serviced" reply with "ah shure, she'll be grand now, sound out, sound out, grand now, ah she's sucking diesel, ah grand car, flyin' it now, ah grand now"

For a €99 service Im pretty sure you wouldnt be getting that kind of oil. I like to use Castrol Edge and platinum spark plugs and for that reason Id steer clear of any offers like this as Im pretty sure neither would be going into my car for that price...
