Collecting your Game Statistics

Anyone else out there collect statistics on each of your rounds, with a reviewing periodically and focusing on areas for improvement. I have been collecting the following items for most of my rounds over the past 5 or 6 years.

    > Stroke Score
    > Stableford Score
    > No. of Drives on Fairway
    > No. of Greens in Regulation
    > For missed Greens, No. of subsequent chips to within 8 feet of hole
    > No. of Putts
    > No. of 3 Putts
    > No. of Balls Lost

Unfortunately I haven't done a lot with the output data and haven't been playing enough to actually see improvement over this time. In fact I have gotten a lot worse over the past 4 years since kids have arrived etc.

It also shows me how many rounds I actually get to play every year, which has dropped down to something in the 20s

I set up an excel spreadsheet on the computer to keep an account of the golf i'm playing. have it calculating average scores on each of the holes in my club, total pars/birdies and a few other formulae.

asked my pro about it and he said it was a good idea, but i should include fairways hit and no. of putts. then i would see where i was going badly. thankfully i don't need to find that out cos i already know....putting.....i couldn't putt the ball on the ground.

mate of mine has it set up on the internet for a pretty small fee.

seems to be a good idea by all accounts, according to some, but it needs to help you so may be it is worthwhile having a look back through the stats and see if they throw up any conclusions for you...and then practice the weaknesses.

and now i'll go and practice what i preach....

For me its not the scoring as such that would be important but for each hole put down where you miss the fairways (left right) and also the green, (short left, long right etc).

This sort of info will quickly make you think about club selection, set up etc more than average score per hole or GIR and FIR.

Your handicap is surely the best way of working out how you are improving over the years without going down the baseball route of stats for everything

Yes, my handicap is certainly telling me that I'm getting worse - fully backed up though with stats ;-)

It's a question of how far you go. I pull off the information after each round from masterscoreboard.co.uk and put it into a spreadsheet. This tells me my scoring on each hole, and works out my indexes etc.

I used it to identify a problem on the 6th/7th in our place and have since played those two holes a lot better which has helped my scoring.

I'd love to also use the GIR/FIR stuff, but would need to think about how I'd record it. Don't want to waste too much time in each round writing down notes.

Yep. Set up an excel sheet. Get average putts, up/downs, greens hit, fairways hit, own indexes, 3 putts, points, gross points etc. I have it so that I can tailor it for any course. Keep a record of all 18 hole rounds on both home and away courses.
