Getting over a bad run

    Hello all,

    I was hoping some of you would have some encouraging words; or words of wisdom for me!

    I'm running the DCM this year (my 1st marathon), and I'm in week 3 of the HH novice training plan.

    Yesterday was just a 5K, with an 8K pace the day before. I felt like poo all the way through my 5K yesterday. I had to force myself to get out the door and go. My legs felt heavy, tired and stiff the whole time, and the only reason I kept running was to get home as quick as I could.

    I was telling myself "come on, push yourself" but nothing was happening!

    Anyway, today is a rest day, so I'm looking forward to relaxing this evening. But I felt so bad about everything yesterday, it left me deflated.

    I'm sure this is something every runner experiences now and then, so how do you get over it?

    Also, on a side note - I work in Km and not miles. I converted the HH program to Km. On the marathon course are there Km markers or is it all just miles??

    I'm a marathon beginner, so I'm not of much help, but I think everyone has one of those runs now and again. It's a real bummer at the time, leaves you a bit deflated, but it'll pass. Try not to let it get in on you (I should take my own advice :o). Enjoy your rest day, and get back out there tomorrow, refreshed.

    Re. KM markings for DCM - I think the KM's are marked every 5KM. Miles are marked per mile.

    If your legs are heavy it could because you are pushing too hard or doing too much.

    You get legs heavy some days so take it easier in those runs

    markers are every 5km in marathon

    But you did it. You felt like **** and still you completed your planned run. So next time you're having a bad time on a run (and it will happen), you can think back to yesterday and say, "**** it, I finished that run and I'm going to finish this run"

    Dude,

    I can appreciate it can dint your confidence when you have a below par day and all I can say to reassure you is that it is very very normal. Somedays you'll not feel like it, somedays you'll be slow, some days you'll ache, somedays you'll find yourself running with the wind at your back, the sun on your face and a HUGE smile on your face.

    The thing with running is it's just like life - keep putting one foot in front of the other and you'll get there.

    You can slow down, but never stop

    Have fun and enjoy the journey ;)

    I had just cycled home from work about half an hour before my run. Was hungry too! Just wanted to get it over and done with asap!

    I remember reading something like that before, or it could have been something like: "having to walk doesn't mean you've failed, as long as you keep moving forwards"... I think it may have been in one of Dean Karnazes' books.

    These bad days are just as important as the good days. Think of them as a mental workout. The fact is you got through it this will stand to you come target race when you feel you cant go on just think back to the hard times that you pushed through in training and take comfort in them. I have been running for the last 13 years and even i get my bad days still they are not something that goes away but are there to remind us how good the good days are

    There's nothing like a good run for getting over a bad one! Just rest today, focus, eat well and get in the right frame of mind for a run tomorrow!

    You can take some comfort that some of the more experienced marathoners go through the exact same thing. I'm currently training for my fifth marathon and my Wednesday evening run this week was one which involved me doing four fast segments during my run. After the second segment I was thinking of quitting the session, but I know from previous experience how important it is to keep the head down and plough through it. Whilst it may be hurting, the feeling of quitting hurts even more.

    There is no doubt you will hit at least one low point during your marathon and you need to know what works for you to dig yourself out of that moment. That's what training is for.

    That said, you also have to listen to your body and if it's telling you that you need a rest, then you rest....experience will tell you.

    (Contradictory advice, I know!)

    I read somewhere once that, out of five runs, three will be average, one excellent and one crap. There's no predicting how they will fall but at least you can be serene after the odd crap run knowing that it's unlikely the next one will be as bad.

    I'm sure this is something every runner experiences now and then, so how do you get over it?
    It's a fairly regular occurrence for me.

    I know it never feels like it at the time, but unless you're obviously ill, it will pass. It sometimes takes me a few miles before I feel anyway right, and some of my most enjoyable runs have started out badly - if I skip the run then I'll never know whether or not it would have gone better.

    I felt so lethargic the week leading up to the Dunshaughlin 10k, and on race day itself, that I almost skipped it. I felt a bit better during the warm-up, then I ran a PB.

    Just keep putting one foot in front on the other, though of course listen to your body as others have advised, and rest if you're ill or exhausted.
