In theory, you should not. That's the short answer.

However, a couple of big studies in American have noticed that people who drink diet soft drinks are more likely to put on weight than those who don't. This could be chicken-and-egg in that the people who are a bit chubby are more likely to be drinking diet drinks then the skinny ones, but the researchers think there is a link.

Since diet drinks have almost no calories, they should not have an effect on weight gain. There is a theory that the sweetness of diet drinks produces an insulin response, so that anything you eat with the diet drink is more likely to be stored as fat. I do know people who have tested blood sugar before and after a Pepsi Max, and found that the drink increased it.

The most common sweetener in diet drinks is aspartame, which many people don't like.

So I really can't say. But I would suggest that you limit diet drinks, and try to drink them when you are not eating.

I think its best to avoid diet drinks as far as possible.

As Eileen says - nobody really is too sure about the inslin response and I definately have my doubts about the impact for a diet.

I drink a fair bit of sparkling water instead.

I'm not sure what people think about sparkling water. It is still carbonated after all. It is certainly a good appetite suppresent (spelling??)

yeah, sparkling water with a drop of ribena light is gorgeous, and a great appetite suppresant as you say.. it's still carbonated tho, so i only have that once or twice a week- nothing beats the ole still water really. sure dont they say that San Pellegrino contributes to cellulite as much as coffee?

the ole sparkling water is a super thrist quencher, especially if you're hungover, that's mainly when i have it, on a sunday with ribena when regular water just doesnt do it for me:)
