    Hi all,

Thinking of changing the car and want something (new) with a bit of poke, I like the look of the octavia, but I know some on here aren't that keen on the skodas. I had a look at the focus but they seem to be 105bhp or the take a big jump up to 200 or so. I'll be looking to avail of the scrappage scheme, so that may be something to take into account. I think the Golf is quite pricey to get a decent spec with a good engine.

Also, any positive or negative comments on this specific engine (I know how many threads there are on the skodas already so apologies in advance!!)

As I said I really like the Skoda, but I'm not completely set on it, just wondering if there's an alternative for the same kinda money with similar spec and more importantly, with a bit of power under the pedal

There is no alternative to the Octavia ;)

    Try this 185bhp!
Failing that, I'd sooner the Civic diesel to the Octavia, 10bhp more, nicer interior by far.

The Civic diesel has 136bhp though, not 150 as in the Accord.

OP, the new Opel Astra with the 2.0 litre diesel engine is available with 160bhp:

The Octavia has a huge boot (so I've read here a few times).

    Not your ornery onager

Opel Astra 2.0CDTi 160ps in either Elite or SRi could be had for around the same price as buying the Octavia 2.0Tdi Elegance.

Haven't seen the Elite spec in the Astra, and haven't driven the 2.0CDTi version (yet - 2 on the way), but I've driven the 1.7CDTi 125ps Astra in SRi and SE spec. The handling wipes the floor with the Octavia, but the 1.7 engine has serious lag issues - 2.0 version should sort that out.

Astra Elite has full leater interior, but doesn't have the parking sensors or Bluetooth that the Octavia has. Octavia has more interior (and boot) space, but the Astra does have much nicer wheels.

Test drive them both and see which you prefer. Think I'd be tempted by the Astra  as I don't need a lot of interior space.

It would be worth your while taking a test drive in the Fiat Bravo150bhp sport.

It is a 1.4 engine with turbo.

It has bluetooth for phone which also reads sms texts while you drive.
Usb port for music on usb skicks etc,17 " sport alloys, eps, hill holder, traction control, dual climate control and lots of airbags.

My old man just got a 1.6 tdi elegance station wagon.

Very impressed with the engine it pulls very well.
Just as good as the old 1.9.

Although I would still hankerfor the extra ponies and 6 speed.

Great kit in the elegance and should be a flier with the 140, then there's the 170 bhp Mmmm Noice.
