I'd say it was the fear of something like that happening that made her do it in the first place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

    She was returning home.

Who knows, maybe her conservative parents and neighbors would have killed her for getting pregnant in the first place.

How sad, probably felt she couldn't face her family with a baby, esp being unmarried.

Her mental state must be shot to bits, sad situation for sure.

I hope she's given a quiet room and a long time to think about nothing else besides the image of her trying to flush her baby down an airplane toilet.

Just imagining it from scratch is sickening enough. I hope it wracks her for years.

Not the first time this has happened either.

There's so much that's messed up - and this is just what we know about!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,289 ✭✭✭Howard the Duck

She could have at least waited to see if it needed a second flush..feel sorry for the person who had to use the toilet after her.

But to be serious.. anyone who does something like this has to have serious mental problems. I doubt she's an evil person but just a person that needs a lot of help. Hope the baby pulls through

Probably spend 12 hours on a flight beside a screaming little brat that then probably puked on his mother.

How someone could do that is beyond my contemplation but it shows how strong family and social traditions are in India

How'd she get on board that late, I would have thought there were restrictions on travelling heavily pregnant

She was returning to India and this goes on in that part of the world

    Honour Killing
An honor killing or honour killing[1] (also called a customary killing) is the murder of a (typically female) family or clan member by one or more fellow (mostly male) family members, in which the perpetrators (and potentially the wider community) believe the victim to have brought dishonour upon the family, clan, or community. The perceived dishonor is normally the result of the following behaviors, or the suspicion of such behaviors: (a) utilizing dress codes unacceptable to the family/community, (b) wanting to terminate or prevent an arranged marriage or desiring to marry by own choice, or (c) engaging in certain sexual acts, including those with the opposite or same sex. Such killings or attempted killings result from the perception that the defense of honor justifies killing a person whose behavior dishonors their own clan or family.

    Not forgetting Acid Throwing

    It's terrrible what happened.
But the girl needs help and it's a pity she felt they was nobody could help her.
If her parents felt that she brought dishonour to the family would she and her child be alive today? I don't know, she was in a terrible situation

I feel sorry for whatever cleaner boarded the plane to clean, and then walked in on that. Imagine the horror you'd feel, being completely helpless in a situation like that.

Why is everybody jumping to the conclusion that she did it to escape censure at home? Why are you all so certain?

I guess people are trying to reassure themselves that nobody would coldly flush a baby down a toilet without a very good reason e.g. fear for their own lives.

If the kid had got flushed out she could have named him Geronimo...oh wait, wrong type of Indian.

Reading that story made me quite angry. I'm feeling quite flushed to think that she could have killed a baby in such a way.

So strong that they go the other direction and families flush each other down the toilet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,104 ✭✭✭easyeason3

How did she think this was going to work?

I'm afraid to poo in airplane toilets in case it won't flush. They just seem so small & narrow.

I blame Michael O' Leary. All this talk of extra charges has made people go to extremes. At least if his plans for charging toilet use comes in it will introduce a world of cheap abortions.

Indeed....think about it, a few hours later she woulda been home and heavily pregnant, surely if she didn't want the family to know she would have stayed wherever she was, got rid of it there and then gone home?

If people think that the only reason that people do horrible shit to kids is because they are afraid of their families, they're mistaken.

Or she could have been even mentally ill.

Perhaps if it was an unemployed single mother from Liverpool, we'd just be calling for her to be hanged, no doubt.

Not saying it wasn't the first thing to go through my mind though, but who knows?

Maybe an ultra-conservative patriarchal family wouldn't even allow a young woman go and study for such a career-orientated course in another country but obviously I'm just idly speculating: like everybody else. :pac:

This baby's welfare should be priority.

This woman was probably in a state of shock when she went into labour
at 30,000 feet. She probably was not fully aware of her actions let alone the consequences.
    She needs help and rehabilitation.

Scared is not a good enough reason, imo. It's fucking sick.

Try and look at it from her angle. She's unmarried and pregnant or has had a child out of wedlock and she's coming back to a society that is deeply hostile to this. They could do anything to her, like burying her up to waist and stoning her to death. She was a really, really desperate woman.

I agree with most of the above. Here are some more points. Cases of women in desperation abandoning their newborn baby have also happened in Europe.
Women have prematurely gone into labour in Germany and went into panic. These women came from families where sex before marriage is not frowned upon. Lots of their relations had marriageless childen. I vaguely recall one case where the woman was married and the husband had a very good income. Labour started in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

This woman was in an aeroplane. Women tell me that the agony of childbirth is desperate. She was all by herself with no midwife or family for support. She could not have been 100% rational. When she does recover these events will haunt her for years to come.

I agree. Anyone who flushes a baby down a toilet can hardly be sane. If the baby dies there will be no punishment she can be given that will match the guilt and pain she will feel.

Mentally ill people must do very evil things without knowing it, but what made me drop the mentally ill defence is that she was able to complete a medical degree without coming to any real and serious attention.

I am glad I am not mentally ill, but then again if i was I might have been a doctor.

There's a billion people in India, it's not all so conservative. I've met a lot of quite open-minded Indians, think Goa and the 60's!

Of course it's a possibility but definately not a certainty

It could be however if we were to contact Bill Gates and ask him to provide planes and toilets rather than the sterilizing vaccines he is presently promoting

For the lovea god, if you don't want the baby then LEAVE it in the toilet or maybe hide it somewhere and ring the airline after you disembark etc...but flushing it? Murder tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭NoHornJan

There is only one person who knows what happened in that toilet.
Even though she had studied medicine, she still had to give birth alone, without the assistance of a midwife and without any painkillers or oxygen etc.
Many women have massive mood swings before, during or after giving birth and should not be held responsible for what they say or do during this time.
I can't understand why none of the passengers or crew didn't hear or suspect something, because usualy it is a slow and noisy affair.
