    I have a 5000 budget for a car. i've narrowed it down to a 03 honda accord 2.0 sport, 145k miles or a 04 mondeo 1.8sci ghia, 84k miles.
which one should i go for?

I'd go for the Mondeo, that 1.8SCi is rare enough over here, I love Accords but 145K would put me off to be honest.

€5000 should get an awful lot more Accord than that though.

Accord over Mondeo any day! 145k miles is a lot but not such an issue with Honda. Im a Honda nut so Ill always pick Honda over most other cars, but in this case having been in both to me the Accord is on a whole different level comfort wise.

Accord all the way--145k is nothing for a Honda.

An 03 Accord with 145,000 miles is worth €5,000?????????????

Might not be in quite as much negative equity on my motor as I expected ;-)

While the Honda is well able for that mileage, I'd be tempted by the Mondeo with a lot less mileage.

Not sure on the reliability of the 130ps SCi engine as there were so few of them sold.

And the rest. My first reaction was that €5000 for a 03 Accord is a pretty decent price, regardless of mileage.

For €5k you'd do an awful lot better on the Accord. That one's worth probably €3k, if even.

To answer the question about those two specific cars I'd go for the Mondeo - the mileage on the Accord is too high.

It's a killer question. The Honda is reliable, comfortable but has high enough mileage it's a little pricey too.
The Mondeo is a great car, not sure about the engine but it's a Ford so it should be ok.
For me it's the Mondeo, less mileage is swinging it.

Drive both and find out which one lights your fire :)

Youre kidding, right? Where exactly would you find a 03 Accord for €3k?

    True :)
Being honest I would defo part with €4000 for that car if I reckoned on keeping it for 3 years, I'd be willing to gamble on it costing me very little over that 3 years, shocks, exhaust, cat, balljoints etc. Wouldn't give any more than €4000 for it though and also I'd reckon she would be very hard to sell this time next year with another 15K / 20K miles on her and as I change my car fairly frequently paying close to €5000 for her I'd class as madness. It takes a lot for me to recommend a Mondeo over an Accord, price and miles coupled with the rarity of the 1.8Sci swung it in this case :)

Ive owned an Mondeo, and currently have an accord, and I will tell you the Accord wins hands down. such a nicer car to drive, better spec'd out and more reliable.

If I was interested in that one I'd offer the dealer 3k and tell him to take it or leave it. Might go to 3500 if it was in exceptional nick.

I never thought I would hear myself tell anyone to buy a mondeo..:o..

I would tell you go for the accord but 145k is crazy. I know hondas are bulletproff etc etc but it aint worth 5k. Shop around op and try and get another accord with less mileage.

Accord anyday over the Ford but the mileage is quite high, the Ford Mondeo is a good car but it's not very well built cheap plastics and things go wrong on them as I've had one where as the Honda is a far superior car in every way, even with the mileage I'd go for the Honda.

I'd take the Mondeo in this instance because that Accord is a bit leggy at €5k for me to take a punt on it.

The bonus of the Mondeo 1.8 SCi is that it was only available in Ghia trim so the standard equipment should be pretty high.

    wtf is a SCi

if they got the same duratec 130/135 bhp engine as zetecs whats so good about it, apart from leather and etc

The SCi unit was a direct injection engine and had 130bhp. It was only available here in Ghia trim which was fully loaded with extras.

And Id say youd have zero chance of driving away in the car! No dealer is going to knock €2000 off the price of a €5000 asking price. High mileage or not, that car is worth more than €3000. I know its hardly the best benchmarking tool, but there are lots of 03 Accords up on Carzone for €6k-€7k and more.

145k vs 85k - it all depends on how that distance was done imho!

I have similar Accord, and very happy with it. So another vote for Accord.

    :P

I know ghia, zetec and lx

    anything more is unnecessary!

and if the SCi got the same engines as a zetec im not too bothered, its all about pedal to the metal power not leather and extras. :p

We have an 01 bora diesel with 295 ish on it. It is now heading for the scrap yard. Only ever serviced, timing belt and maybe 2 clutches. never needed a DMF done.

As for the OP, as a ardent Mondeo buyer, I am on my 4th the 6 years, I would go for the Accord, lovely car. Once it is serviced either will last. I only never purchased one because the hold their value better than a mondeo. I have always bought a car second hand.

Just because Honda's are reliable and the Accord is 'more than capable' of the said mileage, doesn't translate into a positive for the Accord.

The Accord has almost double the mileage, is a year older and overpriced, AND the Mondeo is a good car in it's own right too.
    I would've thought this was a no-brainer?

(And I'm a Jap fan too..)

The reliability of the Honda does sort of make the mileage difference between the cars less of a factor tho, which is essentially the real issue here. Regardless of the mileage, if the Honda has been looked after and is in good nick then its the better choice of the two.

As has been said, the OP will probably pick up a similar Accord with less miles on it for that kind of money. There are other 03 Accords on Carzone with around 90k miles for about €6k.
