moving abroad : how to sell quickly a car that has been unused for more than one year

Hello, and apologies if this has been done before or if this is not the correct forum. I'd appreciate the redirection if this is the case.

I am the owner of a red citroen C3, 50 thousand kilometers approx., first registration 2003, that has been sitting in my building garage for the last year and 3 months, as I did not have any use for it or was interested in paying taxes + insurance for that period.

I have now to leave Ireland to go back home before the end of july, and I need a way to sell it quickly, and if possible to avoid doing the entire procedure to make it road-ok myself, not being very litterate in motor service especially in Ireland...
(I assume it would be changing the battery and oil, a quick cleaning, get the NCT certificate, insurance, tax, garda paper for the non-use period)

it is in a very good state, except for the dirt, and I'm not looking to get full value out of it : getting rid of it quickly without much hassle is way more important to me. of course, getting a little something back of said value wouldn't be bad, but it's not my priority. also, tyres were brand new when I parked it in that garage.

    any suggestion appreciated, thanks !

    Low price!!!

Declare it off the road tho in order to save the new owner potential hassle. You need to do this; they cant AFAIK.

Sounds dodgy to me. Why didn't you use it for so long? And why have you only one post?
    Try Gumtree.ie maybe

The new owner doesnt need to do that,

They just pay the road tax from the change of ownership date. The Tax office doesn't care what the car was doing before you owned it.

    Whats with the ??

There are plenty of reasons why someone wouldn't use a car.

Put it up on websites and be honest and put it about 1 to 1.5K lower than same cars that are roadworthy etc.

    that's because I'm french and a lazy ass :D

when I moved to the city center it was a 5 minutes walk to my new job place, so I had no use for the car. I'm a pretty sedentary guy :)
selling it seemed to be a sure way to need it 2 days after it was gone (murphy was irish, or so I'm told), and I wasn't comfortable with the idea of being, well, without a car.

I came here to find irish people with the knowledge to help me, that's why it's my first post. I can give links to my linkedin profile, or even my resume+portfolio website if that can help too !

Take a few pics, stick it up on www.donedeal.ie, I reckon an asking price in the region of €1200-1500, is all you could expect out of it.

Fair enough, you seem genuine, just you'd be surprised number of fakes on here, adverts.ie, ebay.ie, gumtree.ie that you begin to suspect everyone eventually ;) Best of luck selling it, I'd say put a couple of cheap ads in your local newspaper, and try online too. I wonder could you approach a dealer and see if they would take it off your hands? Probably the quickest way to get rid of it if it is in good condition, but the lowest price also.

There are actually quite a few dealers who seem to be offering cash for second hand cars. Youll get nothing like its market value but if you dont care then its worth checking out and see what youll get.

Bring it with you to france and offer it then, then you also have a way of bringing all your crap over with you on the ferry.

RHD is grand on the continent anyway :)

Or sell as a pickup from france, I sold my Irish reg while it was parked up in Holland.

Another option is to try one of the places like Merlin Car Auctions that offer cash for cars. The prices they give aren't fantastic, but it's quick and easy.

Its french so unreliable enough as it is, Its been sitting up for a year so ALL fluids will need to be changed as they will go block pipes and hoses probably need a good wax and clean costing upwards of about 2-300 and without nct or tax. Depending on how long the NCT has been out for the future owner will have to back date the tests and pay for 2 ncts if he/she wants the 2 year nct.

In all honestly mate your lookin for beteen 400-750 MAX

Try to read the article. There are no stats on reliability here. Drivers were asked to name cars that they trusted the most. There are no stats, its an opinion, not fact. If you want fact try something like the ADAC Pannenstatistik (German AA break down stats) or the results of the German TUV. They deal with millions of cars a year and not what people think.

OP: Give the car a good wash and clean, take photos and stick it in gumtree.ie or donedeal.ie or adverts.ie or buyandsell.ie. Look at equivalent cars and go well under the other prices. Be honest about the car telling the same as you told here and it might go.

You could also do a minor service with a local mechanic, ask them if they think it will pass the NCT, try to get a new NCT and sell it then, it should go fast. You will need to book an NCT first, no idea how long this will take.

Remy, wash it inside and out, make it as presentable as possible, and get it running. Spending big money on anything else is a waste of time, tbh, at this price level. Sell for a reasonable price, as-is.

Post up a pic of the offending beast btw :)

What part of the country are you in ? a local paper with a low price should see it shifted fast enough.

lol, in fairness i think he means pipes and hoses will be blocked (which they wont anyway) and that the car will need to be waxed, a comma would have gone a long way.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Advertise it honestly, describing why you didn't use it and that you are moving abroad in adverts.ie / donedeal.ie / gumtree.ie for €1,995

Jump start it from another car to get it running and to get the battery charged, so it will start when someone comes to view it. I wouldn't even bother cleaning it, the likely buyer will see past the dirt

Accept the first offer over €1,250. You're running out of time.

Good luck end let us know how you're getting on!
