Hi, I was wondering where I would find old tram records? I have an ancestor who operated tram in the early 1900's and was wondering if I could possibly look him up.

It's a long shot but the Irish Railway Record Society has a library and a huge archive of documents from the various rails companies in Ireland. It's possible that some Tram company records are present. You'd need to contact its archivist.

Thanks. There doesn't seem to be any contact information on that site. Does anyone know which company operated Dublin trams at the turn of last century?

    Hi Tenzing.

You may be interested in a recently published work by Bill McCamley (CIE Worker Director) entitled, Dublins Tramworkers 1872-1945.

It is a fascinating account of a Tramway System which was at one time regarded as one of the best in the developed world.

The book is published by the :

    Labour History Workshop.
    10 Glasanaon Park.
    Finglas East.
    Dublin 11.

They or the Author may well be able to point you in the right direction.

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

    Charles Mackay (1812-1889)

As pointed out, your best bet is probably the IRRS. You should also try the CIE heritage office - the surviving records would have ended up in the possession of CIE, it's just a case of finding who has them at the moment.
