Looking for a car around 2200 euro and came across a few madza 626 diesel I am driving a toyota carina but its on its last legs and need a cheap very reliable family car ... not too worried about looks just realiability

So far i have narrowed the search down to

    Toyota Avensis
    Mazda 626
    VW Passet
    Toyota Corrola

Have 9 years full no claims and and 44 so 1.8-2.0 engines wont worry me too much its trying to get the best fuel economy and realiability

the 626 is very old now as is some of the other stuff you mention , buy on condition and get it checked over , if they lasted this long they have to be reliable

    Are you sure it's a 626, and not a 6?

If it's a 6 - walk away, and fast. Do a search on here for Mazda and my name......;)

If it's a 626, the old supercharged one, that's actually quite good. Spares might be expensiver for it though......

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The supercharged diesel engine was only available in the 1992 to 1997 Mazda 626. The last generation 626 from 1997 to 2002 used a straight forward turbo charged unit. Not very advanced or fast but more reliable than the unit used in the 6. Very similar to the Toyota and Nissan TD units of the same age. While Jap diesels of that era were lagging behind their European counterparts they did tend to be ubber reliable and gave good fuel economy. Trying to find a good, clean one these days will be difficult though.

Personally myself I would try and find a nice Peugeot 406 with the HDi engine, way more refined diesel than any of the others on the list.

I would agree with Bazz, the 406 hdi is a fine car, loads of space, comfortable on a long journey, good on fuel, friend of mine has one thats got just over 200k on the clock and still going well.

Are you specifically looking for a diesel op? Im selling a 1.8 rover 75 which would be similar class to the cars you have listed, and in the same price range you have listed

My parent's have a '00 626 diesel (direct injection turbo). Currently has 200k miles on it, and it's alright as far as cars go.

There is a slight knocking sound from the engine at this stage, and the turbo is leaking oil (not much, but the engine bay is covered in oil). Had numerous ABS problems too (the ABS light occasionally comes on every now and again).

Apart from those faults, it's a nice comfortable car to drive, and while it's not as powerful (100bhp) as it's modern equivalents, it does the job fine.

Like most Mazda vehicles, parts are expensive and their isn't as good of a selection of spurious parts that you'd get with European cars.
