Cost of Running a 1.6 vs 1.4 litre engine

    Hey guys, apologies as I'm sure this topic has been done repeatedly in the past - I tried a search but couldn't find what I was looking for.

    Basically, I'm wondering what the difference in running costs would be between a 1.4 and 1.6 version of the same car model, say a 05 VW Golf?

    I'm guessing there would be additional costs for tax and insurance with the bigger engine, but what about extra petrol costs?

    Any other extra costs I'm not thinking of?

    What is there to recommend the bigger engine that will make up for the extra cost?

    Petrol costs is more down to your driving style than to the difference between 1.4 and 1.6.
    A bigger engine would labour less under strain but tbh, the jump from 1.4 to 1.6 is small.

    Try to google MPG for the brand of car you're looking at, it should be a good indicator of petrol costs.

    Went from a 1.4 Focus to a 1.6 Leon and my fuel costs decreased despite the 1.6 being an older engine in terms of technology and having relatively short gearing.

    A Golf is a heavy car and the underpowered 1.4 will need to be thrashed to move at a decent rate. Plus the 1.6 is a more reliable engine.

    The 1.6 is less desirable, so factor in depreciation as a cost as well. Although this could be countered out by a low initial cost.

    TBH, it's Ireland, it's a Golf, buy the 1.4. Neither are going to win races anyway

    I'd probably go for the 1.6 too, although i think it's the ancient 1.6 8 valve lump. There's nothing wrong with it really.

    I'd probably go for the 1.6 too, although i think it's the ancient 1.6 8 valve lump. There's nothing wrong with it really.

    All from vague recollection: I think the 1.6 is the newer one. the 2.0 was the crappy old one. The 1.6 was like 115bhp, just 10short of the 2.0 8v which was a woeful engine. The 1.6 is newer and lighter too.

    The differences in running costs will be pretty small.

    1.6 will have marginally higher road tax and perhaps insurance.

    Fuel consumption will be much the same.

    1.4 will probably consume quite a bit of oil though.

    That's the FSi 1.6. Like hens teeth here. Most here are the 8 valve 1.6. It's an old engine alright, with brutal gearing if you do any sort of motorway work - spins way to high at 120kph. But if it's 80-100 kph I can easily get 40-45 out of mine. Plus in 111k km it's never used a drop of oil.

    Another thing to look for is the condition of the gearbox. It's a well known and costly weak point on both engines.
