How will the rebellious Irish react..........

.......if and when America descends into civil war? Before you answer, know this: much of my own sense of rebellion stems from the near-tonnage of historical literature I've poured through about Ireland's many fights with the British. Indeed, Ireland has helped inform the American rebel-consciousness, like it or not.

Methinks their hearts would soar, their mouths would roar, but abhor any form of war.

(before people get all crazy I have both US and Irish citizenships)

Probably. The Irish have fought almost their entire national lives. They're the proverbial Underdog, and heroic, therein. Yet, as a small country, they don't identify with power. Therefore, they don't understand America.

Not quite in the Grave yet, remember the pensioners protesting when a small percentage of them may have had to start paying for healthcare? :pac:

Like 99% of the world, we'll side with the group that is more sane. Unfortunately this will not be the group that wants to turn the USA into a fundamentalist Christian State, that wants to abolish homosexuality, that wants to force children Christian dogma from birth, and who want no taxes but also want a gigantic military.

The warrior spirit never dies. It might lie dormant, but it never dies.

I'm thinking of your heroic fights with the British. Like most Americans, I have a highly romanticized view of the Irish. Other than that, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. Sorry.:o

You do tend to use a strange variety of rhetoric. Are you sure you're not a re-incarnation of J.R.R. Tolkien?

Maybe. Tolkien tried to create an enduring, useful Western mythology. I argue that wasn't necessary. The story of Medieval Christendom can easily serve that purpose, if accurately explained to educated Western Christians. I humbly consider myself a Western Christian warrior-ideologue.

'Sanity', in these matters, is defined either in liberal or conservative terms, which means, obviously, that it has nothing to do with mental health.

It was precisely because the history of Medieval Christendom was so unsatisfactory that Tolkien created a righteous, honourable, and aspirational mythology in its stead. Tolkien wasn't trying to replace Christianity, he was defending it. He was a devout Catholic. I'm a huge fan of his.

And yes, now that you mention it, I can picture you joining a great crusade to the East. Minds such as yours will always get whipped up by such fervour.

Does anyone else think Peter the Hermit resembles Glenn Beck?

I'm a disciple of British historian Christopher Dawson. Check him out. No one besides Jesus Christ has had a bigger impact on my intellectual life.:pac:

No need for rebellion really when one has a democratic election every five years or so.

What about the culture? Should runaway, illegal immigration be encouraged, by one particular political party, for its own electoral benefit, such that the fundamental culture of the nation is permanently altered by outsiders? I think not. I loathe that very idea.

Your culture was made to alter... There is no American culture. What American culture there ever was was the creation of foreign speaking frontiersmen. And besides, your presidential candidate championed immigration reform... that is until he had to sell his soul down the river in order to be re-elected by the increasingly extremist Republican party base.

What is the fundamental culture of the USA and how do you measure it?

I take it you're native American then?

Didn't runaway Irish immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries fundamentally alter American culture and identity? Do you loathe that too?

And wasn't it GWB who proposed the amnesty for illegal immigrants? With the support of a certain John McCain if I remember correctly.

Ireland: You are a nation of rebels, warriors, freedom-fighters..........Christians. Don't forget that. Don't go the way of the rest of Western Europe. Don't become a nation of Socialist deadbeats, who literally don't give a damn about anything, except their monthly welfare check from the government. That's not you. You have fought for your freedom, identity, future. You have inspired the world of free people, especially America. Don't give up. Don't betray yourself. Marxism is a curse, and spiritual cancer.

The fundamental culture of this land changed when the first European stepped on this land with the intent of colonization, exploitation of natural resources, and the suppression of the Native peoples.

The culture of this nation has always evolved. We live in an organic country that is not bound by strict traditions and is not stagnant in its own expectations.

I'm not a rebel, a warrior, a freedom fighter or a Christian, and I'm very much Irish.

And I feel sorry for you. Socialism is just as addictive as crack cocaine and/or heroine, and just as deadly. It runs contrary to Man's very nature, and kills him, ever so slowly, whenever he adopts it. An aggressive young entrepreneur, in a flashy suit can be reduced to a pot-smoking bum, lying around in his underwear on the couch, all day, at his mom's house, within a month or two, under Socialism.
