    I know you're a knowledgeable bunch
about to take the plunge on buying:

    Corsair VX 450W PSU

ZALMAN CNPS 10X Flex CPU Cooler

    Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (rev. 1.0) - Motherboard - ATX - iP55 - LGA1156 Socket - UDMA133, SATA-300

    Corsair XMS3 - Memory - 12 GB : 6 x 2 GB - DIMM 1600 MHz / PC3-12800 - CL9 - 1.6

    Intel Core i7 920 / 2.66 GHz

    any suggestion?
I've checked and the i7 920 will only do memory up to pc3-8500 (1066 mhz) but on 12gb the best deal I found was that 166 mhz
buying off komplett, around 800 quid the lot

    others I have are:
video card is NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 1gb
    1x 1 tb disk
1 old and small but fast drive for swapping files
    1x S2 HD sat tunner

What are you using this machine for? And why on earth will you need 12GB of RAM?! That was darn expensive even back when RAM was cheap! :o

photoshop / capture NX (RAW photo editor)

12gb is 299 euro, well, is listed, not in stock now :(

    I'm on 4gb now (x64) and I'd like more
    mobo for i7 use 3 modules, so it's either 6 or 12
6 may do now, but I'm getting VAT back so I can give me that luxury...

You need an LGA1366 socket motherboard for that processor, or else a different processor for that motherboard

If you want to keep the cpu I would get this p6x58d-e, brilliant board or if you want to keep the board you could get one of these cpu's and go with 8gb of ram:

Photoshop etc, will certainly benefit from Hyperthreading Technology, so either a 920 (LGA1366) or 860 (LGA1156) would be what I would go for and not the 750...

Suggestions for a 1366 motherboard would be the Asus P6X58D-E (already mentioned) or Gigabyte X58A UD3R...

why do most motherboards have multiple video card slots?, I don't need crossfire or any kind of multiple video cards

I'm starting to think more of an AMD phenom II 6-core, more options (and cheaper) systemboards, but with less memory slots...
