Engine RPM dips slightly when revving

Hello all, I have a bit of minor issue with my Ford Escort. When the engine is at idle and I press the accelerator, the engine's RPM will dip slightly, and then it will rev as it should. It can be a problem when shifting gears as it can sometimes make the car jerk somewhat. I don't have a tachometer in the car so I can't give precise readings.

I suspect it maybe a dirty or partially block pipe in the fuel injection system. Any suggestions welcome, and how to fix it (money is short so I'm looking to do this work myself if possible). I've tried carb cleaner but that didn't really work at all.

The car has the 1.3L HCS pushrod engine by the way.

I know fcuk all about petrols but I think this is a sign of over fueling?

EDIT: Is this the newer escort or the old one?

If it is the newer one and is fuel injected you need to check for air leaks between the air filter and the manifold. Cracked and perished rubber hoses and the likes

    Newer one ('95 Mk6).

Funny you should mention the leak, as the rubber gasket between the air filter box and the fuel injection system (which looks like a carb) is fooked, all cracked and falling apart. Could this be it?

You would be as well off fixing that anyway.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Is the car running EFI or Carb

If it's a carb, it's a Ford VV carb and it's worn. I'd say send it south and get a Weber replacement.

If it's EFI, check for vacuum leaks and wear at the butterfly flap. If the spindles are worn, air can enter there.

If it's not too bad, maybe up the idle a fraction, and drive away.....

    It's EFi

    Thanks for the tips.
