    stupid question on tax...
if I buy a diesel 2006 merc/bmw/VW whatever up the north and then register it down here which tax rules do I have to follow?

I thought it was the old ones so say a 1.9ltr diesel is about 590euro or something like that

but a friend told me it goes on the newer rules because your only registering it down here now after 2008..

bit of clarification please. i'm quite confused

    cheers

All pre 2008 cars are taxed on engine size.

    Are ye sure about that?

For some reason I had it in my head that from 2008 on, any car registered, no matter what year, was taxed on the new system. e.g. a 93 car that I imported tomorrow would be taxed on the new system.

    Don't know where I got it from.

please people, check online, check motortax.ie, check the motor tax office before telling others :D

all cars with a reg plate before 2008 are taxed on the old system, even cars that are imported today, tomorrow etc etc

AFAIK it was like that for the first while after the new system was brought in, but then they removed the loophole.

If the car is January to July 2008 you can choose whichever is cheapest, emissions or engine size.

cant remember that loophole tbh, it was always 2008 cars onwards, the one thing they did change was the july 2008 onwards to any car registered anytime in 2008 can be put onto the CO2 system if required.
