DTT using UK Telly

    Hi

Do I understand this right? UK HD Freeview uses MPEG4, which Irish DTT
    is also using.
Does this mean that any UK TV with HD Freeview will pick up Saorview?
Maghera is my closest transmitter - does anyone know if this site is
    currently transmitting digital channels?
I'm looking at a UK sourced Panasonic NeoPDP 42" Plasma, either the G or V model.
    Any comments?

    TIA

My understanding is that UK HD Freeview uses MPEG2, whilst Irish DTT
is using MPEG4 for the current tests prior to launch possibly later this year.

I bought a telly a few weeks ago which has mpeg4 and I am getting the irish dtt channels so I guess the UK tv won't be worth buying unless you are prepared to use a decoder for the irish dtt tv.

    UK Freeview HD uses Mpeg4 / DVB-T2
    UK Freeview SD uses Mpeg2 / DVB-T

    Irish DTT uses Mpeg4 / DVB-T

DVB-T2 is backward compatible with DVB-T.

So, assuming all parties apply the DVB standards correctly, then it is safe to assume UK Freeview HD equipment will work with Irish DTT.

The Panasonic G20 plasma is confirmed working with Irish DTT in the mpeg4 telly thread , IIRC it also has a Freesat HD tuner for HD Sat channels too.

    Thanks for that useful confirmation.
It looks like I'll be able to go down this route.
I presume if the G works, then the V series will also.
For now, if Maghera aren't yet transmitting digital, I'll put up with
the lack of a VHF tuner and accept I may have to watch RTE through
    Sky only.

Presume absolutely nothing and search the TV sticky for the model number willya :(

Maghera has had digital for over a year but if you do not currently have tv3 analogue off maghera then you are not aerial compatible with digital. So go read the Maghera thread too.

Panasonic are notorious for incomplete firmware. Search this board for the headaches they have caused with their combo TVs!

Panasonic are generally more compliant nowadays but I would not advise anyone to buy a SPECIFIC model that was not confirmed working by a regular on here. Panasonic have more telly models available than anyone else and you must get the letters and numbers spot on.

Irish models end with an L so a TX-L42U2 is NOT the same as a TX-L42U2L in Panasonic land. ONLY buy the precise model confirmed as working by a regular.

In Panasonic land you gotta be careful. You have no consumer rights buying the wrong Panny in the UK.....seeing as there is nothing wrong with it in the UK :)
