I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

If I'm not mistaken you are allowed to drive to the NCT centre with no tax and home again as you cannot tax a car without a valid NCT.

I think you can tax it online but good luck if you have a crash

You can tax a car anywhere wthout an NCT.

(Waits for someone to refute with an RF100 with a Certificate of Roadworthiness section or a horrendously old one with an NCT section)

I didn't know that! I always understood it had to be NCT'd or for a van DOE'd so you could tax it.

But if the tax and NCT are out are you allowed to drive it to the center for testing with insurance cover?

You can indeed tax a car without an NCT, I done it on Friday in the office and you can do it online also. I did it loads of times!

you can tax it without NCT, full stop. In person or online. The requirement was done away with, years ago.

What's a crash got to do with tax ?

I meant taxing it and using it without an NCT.

They can refuse to cover a claim if it has no nct, although I do recall someone saying they can refuse if you have no tax also (not sure on about this though)

I don't really understand why someone would tax their car, and not nct it (assuming roadworthiness).

It would be like saying I will obey the speed limit going this way, but not while going that way.

Even if the car was not roadworthy, and you had decided not to nct the car, why would you say to yourself 'oh I must tax the car, 'cause if i get caught without it...'

+1 UNLESS you were waiting for an NCT dated. If you were simply avoiding your nct i wouldn't bother taxing it, it's not going to help a whole pile lol

No they can't. An insurance Cert, once issued under the Road Traffic Act means you are covered to drive.

That doesn't mean they can't come after you, separately, under a civil suit, afterwards, for any claim they've paid out for, but they can't refuse to honour any claim for a policy in force. And you can't be prosecuted for 'no insurance' for it in the interim, either.......

I'd really like confirmation of that

So if i drive without an NCT and my brake pipes burst due to poor condition (easily picked up on an nct) and I have a collision with another car your telling me the insurance company will pay out no problems?

From what I know they won't as you haven't fulfilled your end of the contract by keeping the car in a roadworthy condition. Even if you are in an at fault collision without mechanical failure I'm pretty sure they can leave you high and dry if you have no NCT. There is no point in having an NCT system if they don't

Even if you have an NCT it does not mean your car is roadworthy.
Let say you have an accident right after you passed the NCT because a coroded brake line just burst, you can not sue them.
Even on the cert itself it is written it is not a proof the car is roadworthy.

When I tax my cars, and I go down regularly because often I forget to do it online, I never write down the NCT details because I am too lazy. They never asked me anything. The tax office guy don't care, they are not here to enforce NCT on cars, this is just a way to capture the NCT details for the Garda or so I suppose as I don't think the garda has access to the NCT database directly. I stand corrected.

Thats understandable but you can be pulled if your car is NCT'd and not roadworthy

Also as you say it doesn't guarantee your car is roadworthy but you still have to have one by law

Yeah sure the cars are pretty well tested anyway, I'd say if they pass, they are pretty good, but this is just a legal/responsability thing I suppose. They decline to take the hit if anything wrong happens.
