Could I shrink the waist of my jeans?

I recently bought a pair of jeans which are far too big in the waist. They're supposed to be 34" but they're more like 36". I thought they might be alright with a belt, but they look ridiculous. The waist gets all scrunched up and the button hangs below the belt.

I've already washed them so I can't return them. I was wondering if I washed them at 60 degrees (the label says to wash at 40) would it shrink the waist? I wouldn't mind if it shrunk them all over as they're rather baggy. I don't want them falling apart though as I could give them to someone else or bring them to a charity shop if I can't wear them myself.

Could also probably get them altered? but obviously that wouldn't solve the baggy effect

Get them altered. Would only cost about 8 quid.

Thanks. I don't mind too much if they stay baggy as long as the waist fits better.
