    Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the place for asking these questions so mods please feel free to move it.

Basically I was told that I'll probably need this surgery. The consultant told me the in's and out's so to speak of the operation. So no advice needed here.

How long does this surgery take? Someone said that you could be out of the hospital in 4 hours which is amazing. Forgot to ask that question.

My main question is regarding the cost, how much would this operation cost for someone with no insurance? It'll probably be a cartilage repair or partial removal.

The consultant said she'd find out and let me know tomorrow or the next day, I just don't want to be shocked when I hear the figure :)

I very much doubt if it would be possible for anyone here to answer your question; there are too many variables involved. My advice is to wait til the consultant (or more likely, their secretary) rings you and ask them your other questions at the time. It might also be a good idea to write your questions down in advance, so you don't forget them again!

    Ah well, sorry about that.

I already have a pile of them ready ;) I always think I've asked all the questions I've needed to until I walk out of the door of the place, I'll make sure I get to talk to her anyway as she's got results of a scan and will need to discus the options.

Wife had it done as insurance didn't cover it. Cost €2800 all in.

I had it done exactly a month ago yesterday, in the beacon, repairing a large tear in the cartilage on the outside of the knee. Was on the table at half 8 in the morning, home in my bed by half 12 that afternoon.
Insurance covered it but the costs being mentioned above seem spot on.

Most of the private hospitals are trying to be as competitive as possible. You can phone the finance departments and they will tell you exactly what they will charge. Some Consultants work in multiple hospitals and the cost can vary between them.

The two costs involved are the Consultant's fee and the hospital fee. The hospital fee is the expensive one and that is where there is some variability.

I'd love to hear some specifics on those who have "shopped around". I am guessing it's not worth going to another country? Just found out this morning I am going to (most likely) have surgery to repair substantial injuries to my knee.

You may easily have transport issues having it done abroad - flying on a newly repaired knee will not be comfortable.
