Hypothetical shortcut to qualification

I'm ACCA, so this wouldn't work for me, but I was looking at mutual recognition agreements between the bodies and since I was bored, I started to look for shortcuts to qualification through using mutual recognition, this is what I came up with.

You're a trainee CA with a degree in business studies or accounting for instance. You've been let go and can't get your 3.5 years of experience, you'd have to pay a small fortune to keep up with courses and exams yourself. Now you're in trouble!

But, If you meet the prerequisites for a US CPA (150 semester hours of related education, 12 months of experience). You can hop on a plane to some states (some are more open to non residents doing the exams), take 4 computer based exams and qualify as a CPA. Then head back to Ireland and through mutual recognition change over to Chartered Accountants here.

Actually, now that I think of it, I could head there and do that and become a Chartered Accountant, the ACCA exams count towards the 150 semester hours!

Yeah - because the US CPA exams are renowned for being easy ;)

Have you seen the P6 thread here, amongst others? None of the exams are easy, with the CPA though, you know if you passed or failed straight away and you can retake the next day.

I'm proposing that student CA's who find themselves at a loose end, could have an option.

I have, although it would seem easier to take a different ACCA paper option than to study up on US Law and GAAP etc and hop on a plane to the US.
