I stayed here in January, Ramblas Hotel, great location and prices wee good then:

Look up apartments on or beside La Ramblas, I was in Barcelona last year too and we found one that was great value, there were two beds and they but in two camp beds to accomodate 4 of us for the same price. I can't remember what it was called but it was literally a 20 second walk from La Ramblas.

Las Ramblas is kind of like O'Connell Street or Pana - it's nice to go see during you're stay, but it's very touristy and therefore has a high concentration of petty crime and prostitution, as well as drunk tourists. Tbh I'd advise staying in a different barrio, once you're near the metro you'll be grand.

We got ana aprtment close to the beach when we were there. Cant remember the name but we got it on www.hostelworld.com. Perfect location. It is lovely down by the beach and 10 minutes walk to Las Ramblas. Personally I wouldnt want to be any closer to Las Ramblas, not the nicest place at night with them damn prostitutes trying everything to rob you

Stayed there 3 years ago, was cheap and an excellent hotel..

And the bus from the airport drops you straight to it (from the ryanair airport)

Stayed in Hotel Jazz a few months back. It's about a 2 minute walk from the top of Las Ramblas, which isn't all it's cracked up to be tbh. Nice hotel, good central location, close to a metro station, reasonable enough price wise.
It's #7 on Trip Advisor as well.

Friends of mine stayed in Murmuri. It looks real nice & they liked it. A little more expensive then Jazz (for my dates anyway) & was about 15 mins walk from Las Ramblas. Not as much shops etc.. up around it but not miles away either.

Thanks for all the advice ... Consensus seems to be to look in another area :( I had heard great things about Las Ramblas what a pity! Good thing I posted up here before going! Thanks guys

Las Ramblas is great, dont worry about that, it is just the odd shaddy character on the street. Just be aware that there are a lot of pickpockets on the street. Going by your name i am guessing you are a women, but at night a few prostitutes usually come over to young lads at night, feeling him up. Little will the guy know but they are feeling out for his wallet. But if you have your wits about you Las Ramblas can be excellent fun

It's not that bad, I was just expecting more because you do hear so much about it. I was there in February & maybe it was a bit quiet. Might be better this time of year.
Anyway, as a location I thought where we stayed was perfect. Even though we didn't think Las Ramblas was great, it is central & all the main sights are easy to get to from there.
I wouldn't let the stories put you off, just be careful & you'll be grand.

This is very near the Ramblas in the Gothic part of town, but it's still pretty quiet. Overlooking two squares, it's probably one of the best situated hotel in the city. I've stayed a few times. Nothing too glamerous, but spotless and see if you can get a room on the corner. Fab views out your balcony window!

Las Ramblas is a great place to stay and offers a lot of budget accommodations. Some of the ones worth mentioning are Hotel Cuatro Naciones, Hotel Lloret and Hotel Sant Agusti.

Hotel Lloret is adjacent to some of the best high-end shopping areas in Barcelona. Rooms are quite basic, but are a steal for US$100 for double room per night. Make sure to take a room which has a balcony to enjoy the stunning view of Barcelona.
