Just watching some Family Guy and noticing a couple of clips of the funny old-style chatter people did in the old movies. Is there a name for this?

"Fast talking guys" jaysus, I'm not sure that's exactly a sub-genre

I recommend His Girl Friday or Arsenic and Old Lace, both are fantastic and very funny

In fact His Girl Friday seems to be on youtube in its entirety.

    Enjoy!

Are they the ones where "buster" is often used as an insult?

E.g. the gin-drinking, chain-smoking, sultry femme fatale wearing a satin negligée at all times saying to the hard-boiled detective in a husky voice: "You got some nerve turnin' up here buster"... before blowing him?

Think this was actually the done thing, people just reading a script and if it was lighthearted attempting to be zany.

then Brandos 'On the Waterfront' introduced us to method acting

Nobody did any blowin' in the days before the world was in colour, on camera anyway. And they weren't femmes fatale, they were dames and loose women.:)

OP, people had to talk faster back then because the average life expectancy was shorter.

You might be looking for "screwball comedies" btw.

Banner: Listen, rummy, I'm gonna say it plain and simple. Where'd you pinch the hooch? Is some blind tiger jerking suds on the side?

    Barney:
    Yes...?
