Dead laptop screen dead/black on Dell Inspiron

I have a Dell Inspiron 16400 and when I turned it on yesterday the screen remained completely lifeless and black. The laptop itself did whirr into action as I heard the windows music from it and when I checked the disc drive it started playing a dvd that was in the drive but I could see nothing as the screen was "off".
Today I turned it on and it started as normal with the screen working. I used it for 30 mins and it remained fine. I turned it off then and attepted to turn it on again and I had the blank lifeless screen again. Ive tried several times tonight and got the same.

Anyone got any clue as to what might be up or if there's anything I could do?

quite possibly the backlight so, or lcd screen, could even be mainboard

your only option is to take it in somewhere for repair for it to be narrowed down
