It's not too bad if they drive it on but the idiots that cruise along it are looking for a slap.

I wonder why the person in the right hand lane with a queue of traffic behind them and is constantly undertaken by these people never gets the hint that perhaps they should move to a different lane

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

Because 90% of drivers don't know it's an overtaking lane. They think it's just another lane.

Thank God for that little white strip in the middle of the road that someone put there for us motorcyclists to use as a guide.

It's not just another lane. Its the FAAST lane. Reserved for us better drivers.;)

The pavement is perfectly safe once those damn pedestrians stay off it.

Learnt a cool trick on the motorways in France when road-tripping round Europe. If you indicate to the right behind the person driving in the fast lane, they (mostly) get the hint and move in to the slow lane.

No idea why it works in Ireland too. Maybe they think I'm mental and am going to turn into the concrete barrier taking everyone in a 10 metre radius with me if they don't get the f*ck out of my way.

    They are not entirely wrong.

Probably better off in this forum if the message gets through to at least some people.

Maybe generalising here, but people that frequent the motoring forum would have more of an interest in the general topic and might actually know the rules of the road ie. not using the right hand lane for general driving. There is an awful lot of people that don't think they're doing anything wrong and pissing off other people on the motorway.

Anyone else notice that this happens more on the N/M7 than other roads around the country?

whats worse is the middle lane. not a soul in dublin knows what the middle lane is for.

    Whats a "moterway"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭Antamojo

    Don't you mean "What's a "moterway"?"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

Part of the problem is that not enough people call it the "overtaking lane" they call it the "fast lane"

one even sees road signs which say "slow lane ahead"

    Unlikely, here.

No, the closest that comes to it is the motoring forum. Been done to the death.
There is an awful lot of people that don't think they're doing anything wrong and pissing off other people on the motorway.

I'm not a road user on that strip, no. But there are motorway users that would like to use the maximum speed for a motorway where possible. There are road users who dilberately stay in the over taking lane under the maximum limit purely to piss people off behind them. I'm not claiming for a second you're one of them, I'm just saying it happens. It infuriates other drivers into under-taking. They're equally as guilty in my book.

I use the over taking lane frequently. If theres a clear strip ahead of me in the left lane I will always use it, but I'd rather hop back out into the over taking lane than ride the arse off another car that is comfortable with their own speed. But theres no doubt about it, theres the abnoxious gits that hog up the over-taking lane, completely defeating the purpose of it in the first place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

Then theres the ones who try and justify it by saying "sure Im going at the speed limit"

Listen sunshine you are not a police officer and you dont have a calibrated high precision speedometer. (Ordinary speedometers can legally overread by up to 10%)

because you can't do 160 in the driving lane with all the slow people

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,631 ✭✭✭✭antodeco

The main reason? Because if you drive according to the rules of the road, you will NEVER get back into the overtaking lane, because all the other cars are in it.

What annoys me, and I nearly asked my friend what she was playing at doing the same thing yesterday, is when traffic is merging onto the motorway, you're on the leftmost lane, there's plenty of room in the middle/overtaking lane and far right overtaking lane, and YOU DON'T SWITCH LANES.
Wtf? I know the merging traffic doesn't have right of way but it's not exactly helping anyone to stay on the left lane like you own it (and possibly having to brake) instead of politely moving over to make room.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,975 ✭✭✭W.Shakes-Beer

Heading northound on the M50, its just full of gob****es jumping lanes! the amount of gits in Audi's that belt down the outside and then career across two lanes to their exit.

Its grand to stay in the outside lane if you're actually booting it, but if Miss Marple in her micra is heading to blanch at a whopping 60km/h in the outside lane, thats when the fury comes out...and driver her off the road.

The majority of Irish drivers don't know how to use motorways or roundabouts, that's why.

Let's hope Darwinism sorts them out soon.

cuz there planks, no id say its because you can pass your test in this country with out ever haveing lessions!

Anyone who hogs the overtaking lane gets my blaring headlamps on full blast from behind and an annoying amount of beeping to go with it. It's very rare that they stay out there much longer.

Annoyingly though, some of the d/ickheads actually pull back into the overtaking lane once i've gone past them!!

Ditto. I find flashing the lights works and gets them out of the way fairly rapido.

    I bloody hate slow drivers!

Posting here cause this is an appropriate title, driving on motorway as part of daily commute, theres about a 10k 120km/hr stretch and there is a heavy volume in the mornings. The overtaking lane carries most of the traffic as the inside lane is dotted with trucks or people going slow. Weaving in and out isnt really an option. So I'm in overtaking lane and there is about 50 yards to car in front of me but they are at tail end of the q so no panic getting up his hole. Look in my rear mirror and a guy is no more than 2/3 feet back from me, eyeballing, dangerously close. I speed up a bit but he keeps up that close, i, admittedly tap the brake to get the red light on, give him a warning to back off, wrong i know but not necessarily dangerous. He veers left and swings in front of me and slams on the brakes, then sticks up the fingers or some other gesture. If i hadnt been aware of how nutty he was would have easily crashed. Anyway off he goes, right up the hole of the next guy, who again has nowhere to go. Could i report him?
