Background.......I have a new Canon 5d ii on order from a reputable bricks & mortar camera store in Ireland......... I understand that the warranty offered is for 12 months ( I presume that this is the Canon Warranty ) .........now the quick question ...If the shop were to close in the coming 12 month period (recession and all that) where would that leave me if my camera needs repair. Do I deal directly with Canon? Any info or advice welcomed. Thanks.

you'll probably find that the warranty card or info supplied with the camera come from the manufacturer, so i suspect that if the shop closes, you will be able to contact canon ireland directly.

plus, bear in mind that the 12 months only applies to the 'extra' warranty granted by the manufacturer - you have rights in law which as often as not extend further; that if you buy a good which fails within the expected lifetime, you have an expectation it will be repaired. e.g. if you buy a washing machine with a 12 month warranty, and it breaks after 13 months, you should expect it to be fixed for you as 13 months is considerably less than you should expect a washing machine to last.

12 month guarantee is with Canon ..... receipt with shop is only proof of purchase....and start date of guarantee.

btw, consumer law does not apply if the goods are used for professional purposes.

they do; they get covered by the warranty, but consumer law does not apply.

    Thanks for the info.
I ordered the camera ( 5D ii ) on the 27th May and I'm still waiting.......with too much time on my hands I got to thinking about :
    1. My deposit, - if they closed before I got the camera !!!
    2. the warranty- if I got the camera and then the shop closed!!!

Reckon I'll have to wait and see.........

Wow... since 27 May? That's a long wait. Which shop is that? I've been asking around and few shops told the 5D is in supply shortage. And, there's waiting list!

Yep Canon seem to have issues with just about all their EOS models at the moment, despite the fact that they now expect shops to forecast their orders months in advance (according to one of the owner of one shop in town I was chatting to yesterday).

Have you tried getting yourself in the que at more than one shop? Quite a few of them will allow the deposits to be refundable seeing as the cameras are in such demand and they know they can sell whatever stock they are issued. Plus the Canon Professional Centres are meant to get priority when stock is being divided up between the UK & Ireland.
