hey, ive got a rover 414i and its been sitting up for a bit.

But recently i started it to make sure it was ok for my approaching NCT, i was doing all the checks etc going through the car with a fine tooth comb everything seemed normal except when i revved the car to the redline in neutral it sprayed something ( god knows what ) out of the exhaust about ten feet behind the car lol.

it was some sort of liquid and it smelled like oil and petrol.. but the smell isnt strong enough to say its either.. it cant be normal but could any1 shine a light on this?

P.S: the emissions are disgraceful too but ive got Stp and im gonna clean the lambda. any other ways of sorting it?

    thanks in advance :D

It's probably just condensation that had built up in the exhaust system. Check your coolant level just to be sure.

Rovers were always good at letting go of their haedgasket I'm afraid. It's possible you could be looking at some surgery.

    +1.

If you start a car and leave it to idle for a while, then rev it hard it will spit condensate from the exhaust. This will be black in colour from soot in the exhaust system.

To be sure, keep an eye on the coolant level but I doubt you've anything to worry about. If coolant was leaking past the head gasket you'd have more symptoms. But do keep an eye on the coolant level as some 414 engines are prone to head gasket failure.

thats what i would've thought, but the gasket was done 10k miles ago.. and theres only 70k on the clock so it should be a while yet. plus i don't have the k-series engine :D Ive got the Honda engined model :)

Ah yes the k-series was infamous for headhasket issues. Bit you've had your head done on a non-k? Interesting. Anyway as others Have pointed out hopefully it's just condensation. Fingers crossed. When the car cools down have a look at the inside of the oil cap and see of there is a brownish coloured mayonaise deposit.

    Best of luck.

I'd go easy on the revving, especially if the car hasn't been driven in a while. Have you changed the oil & filter?
