Now that is July anyone have any idea when the Irish apple online store will
let you pre-order Ipads. Start of July end of July ? is it likely to roll over to August.

I had been holding out for it to be officially released in Ireland as
some people in work got some from the States and mentioned they needed
to use the American itunes stores and buy vouchers, or get vouchers from ebay to buy apps which sounded annoying, and they also said they needed
to activate it over there for some reason rather than waiting until they got home to Ireland.

There's been some speculation that it could be delayed until September-November.

Not sure what they were on about. I bought mine in Gatwick and activated in Orlando. I just plugged it in to a laptop and activated it through my Irish iTunes account and purchased a few apps. Some stores will even activate it for you if you don't have a laptop at hand. My advice is get one when you can.

And reliable and reasonable places you can import one from the UK?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭bullets

OK I just made a purchase from
    http://electronics.simplyelectronics.net
The store says they post worldwide I am presumming
that they will ship an Ipad to Southern Ireland.

Is there any reason why stores that post globally would refuse
to ship an Ipad ? are the legally bound only to ship to certain places?

So if there are no issues with getting one delivered from
an online store I should be able to activate it using my existing Itunes account that I use from my Itouch ?

my Irish itunes store shows softare available for Ipad,
I did not try to buy any since I dont have one yet.

Fingers crossed there wont be any issues.
Still trying to figure out the catch! if there is one, as
in what I cant do with one if its not released here.

No issues. There's a full range of iPad apps on the iTunes store. Been using it myself for about 2 months now.

Cheers thats a relief, dunno why I waited so long.
I could only afford the 16g one but I decided feck it buy the 32gig but it was a stretch of the budget so I could not go the extra 100 Euros to get one with 3G.

Is there anywhere that sells them a bit closer to the retail price?

Well in Gatwick airport Dixons have the 16g wifi for £416, which is slightly under the RRP. I'm sure that price is the same for all their airport outlets.

You are both right. When the iPad was launched initially only the US store had iPad apps. Now that the iPad is in European counties apple started serving iPad apps to other store even if that country doesn't have the iPad on general sale like Ireland.

Question for those who have bought it. How is it as an ebook reader?

795€ for 32GB WiFi at simplyelectronics is a rip off. The 32's will retail at 600. I got mine off fonezonline for 699

Looks to me like you both got ripped off.

Haha 100 euro more to have it before it's even out without any pre order hastle is fine to me ( they go for more on ebay) but 200 is a bit steep

Got a 64gb in the states 3 months ago now with belkin skin for €640 all in.

Looks like both the phone and the pad are going to be delayed. I'm in Amsterdam at the mo and the carphone warehouse have big signs on the doors of their stores so will ask one of the lads to translate tomorrow, holland are in the same launch window as us.

As posted numerous times I'm thrilled with my iPad and delighted I bought it in April in the states and didn't wait for apple Ireland.

To all of ye waiting get up to Belfast and buy one now.

Yeah, it looks more and more like it'll be August. Even RTE's Drivetime ran a story on it yesterday evening, with Mary Wilson suggesting it could be as late as September.

I'd drive up tomorrow if I thought I'd get one. Apparently they're a rare as hen's teeth up there at the moment.

It would be great if any members up there could do a recon if they had the time and post the results.

Question for those who have bought it. How is it as an ebook reader?

I find it very comfortable TBH, especially using iBooks, where it is easy to adjust the brightness on the fly. Though I still prefer GoodReader as my reading app, since most of my books are in PDF anyway.

It's not as easy on the eyes as e-Ink (my wife has an older Sony Reader) but it's pretty cool to have a color screen (especially for comic books - I have a lot of cbr/cbz comics and the iPad is the best device I've ever had to read them on).

Ultimately though, it'll be more comfortable for others and less so for some - I stare at a computer screen all day anyway so I can't say the iPad feels uncomfortable. It's a great screen to boot with very good viewing angles.

Agreed with being ripped off, I had been waiting for the Irish release
but since its seems it was going to be delayed could not resist the urge
to purchase one from abroad. (I've a parcel at home so I think it may have got delivered today) I did not know anyone in the States that could get me
one and tried to avoid online stores from the USA as did not like the idea of seeing one price, then having state tax added, and then getting hit with vat and high delivery charges.

I would have also thought that 600 Euros would have been the rough
figure that the 32gb ones would be selling in Ireland considering that if
bought from the apple U.S. store they would work out around 570 ish with vat.
(not sure if you just pay vat or if there is additional American sales tax thats extra )

The fonezoneonline price works out as 706.95 inc Shipping.
the simplyelectronics price I paid was 729.95

Looked this morning and they appear to have upped the price.
And it may be a mistake as they have both the 64gb and the 32gb prices
    the same.

What disgusted me is that when you look at the price they have
a before discount price too which is just nuts:
    €799.95 Before Discount: €1039.95

    More unbelievable shocking prices were
€89.95 for the real crappy standard plastic Apple case
€109.95 for a glorified SD card reader.

At the end of the day as much as I felt I was getting ripped off price wise
I still was willing to spend the money to get one which is totally my fault :-)

Are you sure you paid 729? I checked simply electronics alot of times as there were one of the only companies delivering to ireland and the prices were always way to high. It still says 799.95 for a 32GB Wifi

My iPad was 699€ because i met and paid cash on hand eventhough i taught they offered free shipping, it says it on there website.

When is yours expected to be delivered btw?

got it 5 mins ago . Just activating it now,
had a wee bit of trouble as it was not recognized so had
to reinstall itunes and that did the trick.

Yep 729.95 is what was charged to my credit card.

Bullets, I'm sure (and hope) the pain of paying the 129.95 over the expected price will ease over the coming weeks as the release date drags on and on and on...

Thing is the place is full of speculation, which amounts to nothing, The way I see it is that apple will do what they always do and tell nothing to any-one until they are ready. Its actually funny when you hear people giving out about the Apple store employees when they say they don't know when products are arriving etc.., truth is they genuinely know nothing. Apple holds a tighter grip on its flow of information than any other company and it never loses sales regardless of what the stock situation is. Its not like anyone who's after an iPad can satisfy that desire with something else. You either 1) Wait , 2) Buy Online 3)Buy when abroad.

You have to give it to them, I dont know of any other company selling any other product that commands such loyalty and desire from its customers. (Ive never seen a queue outside a Nokia store - actually Ive never seen a Nokia Store).

Check the gateway on your laptop. Then go to that address on your computer browser. (usually 192.168.1.1) the username / passwords to log into the web page is normally "admin / admin" or "admin/password" - might even been printed on the router, worst case scenario u can just re-set the router

Yeah, all this September speculation is based on that Silicon Republic story - half of which consisted of a quote from Apple that is several months old. God knows who their source is. A few days later they were incorrectly reporting that 3 would be selling the iPad in early August.

Apple just doubled production of the iPad, and their website still says July. Another delay can't be ruled out, but we really don't know anything yet.

Well put. Plus - Sites like Silicon Republic will write an iPad story because the popularity of the device drives traffic by luring customers hunting for info, then present them with a non story littered with ads. (god bless the new safari reader option)
