Hi All, Just wondering is it worth my time getting my car tracked and balanced and will it sort my problem. I have an old bmw(99) and am getting shakes/tremors in the steering wheel when i am doing about 100kmh, when i speed up to 120kmh its not as bad if even there, but when i slow down again it gets bad again!Anyone any idea what this issue is? or what can fix it if not tracking/balancing?Any help would be great!

Tracking and balancing could fix this. It could also be that the bearing is gone in in one of the wheels.

its most likely your wheel(s) has a slight buckle in it.

    Ive the exact same problem.

Brought it to 2 garages and they confirmed.

Did i heck, ive lovely original Ford alloys would cost me a small fortune to get new ones,
They said the buckle isnt enough to fail an nct but its noticable say while driving down a motorway you can feel a slight vibration in the car.

I couldnt justify spending a few €100 on that, as the garage said - it was most likely from the car hitting curbs etc while parking - and since the girlfriend is insured on the car, it wouldnt make much sense in replacing them ha! if you get me.

    Hope this helps

Between €20 and €40 i reckon. Maybe ring before you go to any garage.

The first thing id try is to change one of the back wheels to the front or use the spare, and if the pull is still to the left it cound be your tracking, tie rod end, it shouldnt cost you more then 50 euro to fix

just a little more info - was driving today and noticed that the steering wheel when driving straight is not straight but slightly to the left.... so if i wanna go in straight line it means i gotta have steering to left - get me? :o

I have a similar problem in my 320i because of a combination of a worn ball joint and slightly buckled alloy. it happens only between 90-110 km/h.

steering wheel shakes more excessively if I turn it at these speeds.

    check your ball joints too

I was having the same in a Rover 600. Got my wheels balanced at the weekend and it completely removed the tremor in the steering wheel. Cost €20 in the Fast Fit in Clarehall.

The steering wheel not being dead straight when going straight is an alignment issue. Not sure if it's an NCT fail but don't think it's overly expensive to get sorted either.

Road Cambers to the left so you'll always get a slight pull to the left.

Why don't you just get the buckle straightened out? It's not so expensive, and you don't have to replace any wheel.

If its shuddering at high speeds, it could be a track rod end on the brink (just replace one last week on my car)

Easy check, jack the car up ar the front, and try and push and pull the wheel from the side, into and away from the car (if you saw top gear on Sunday, James May's merc had a banjaxed trackrod end on the drivers side, you could see the play in it when the safety engineer did this test)

I would not think you would get your tracking done for that money never mind balancing aswell

Around my area every garage charges €40 for tracking. Balancing is €10 per wheel.
