    Hi,

I am returning to college full time to do a one year add on course get a Level 8 qualification. I will be leaving a full time job in August (have been working full time for just over 5 years) to go back to college. I am applying for the maintenace grant but don't think I qualify for anything else because I wasn't claiming any social welfare payment? This seems so unfair, the people who work are being punished while others who don't bother working get the Back to Ed allowance. I know not everyone is like that but where is the incentive to try get a job if you can go back to college all paid for if you are unemployed for 12 months?

Is there anything else I would be entitled to? I'm single and will be paying a reduced rent from Sept (living with friends, landlord is a friend)

Whether youare entitled to a maintenance grant or not doesn't depend on whether you were recieveing social welfare. It is means tested which means you could be entitled to a grant if you were earning under a certain ammount.

If you go studentfinance.ie and click on maintenance grant it will tell you the income limits and how much you may be entitled to.

    Hi Sassypsych,

Sorry I was half ranting, I should have made myself clearer. I know I'm entitled to the maintenance grant, my issue is that I am not entitled to the special top up grant because i wasn't receiving a social welfare payment. I only realised this over the weekend. I thought once the income was below a certain level you got the top up grant. I thought I would qualify seeing as I will have no other income from Sept but I won't!

I'm not being smart but isn't the top-up if your earning less than like 22,000 euro a year?

If your making more than that I'm sure the extra thousand or so couldn't be that much of a loss??

    Hi Crow92,

The top up grant is an additional €3,105. I am earning €28000 per year and it will be less than that this year because i will leaving my job next month.
