    Hi all
As the title goes, im not sure if i should change or not.
Im a 15 handicapper and currently play with Mizuno Mx 17.
At the moment i hit these irons long and straight (apart from my 7iron which i always seem to hook) but dont control that well.
What i would be looking for would be a set that sound nice to hit, look well, control well and oviously be long and straight.
I would be thankful for club recommendations as well.

Long and straight, WTF. Would it not be more fitting to concentrate on where you're losing all your shots if your irons aren't the issue?

and the prize for the worst thread of the day goes to......

    Ya, change them.
Sounds like they are causing you no end of grief alright..........
Not sure what the don't 'control them that well' bit means, but as a guess I'd say it isn't the clubs fault...........

OP was looking for advice not smart arse comments :D

I recently changed to the Calloway Diablo forged irons, got a great deal from McGuirks at €399 but I don't think this offer is on any more. They tick all the above boxes.

If you hit them all well apart from the 7 iron it might be worth getting the shafts frequency checked, the 7 might have a duff shaft in it.

But like everyone else says why change them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 330 ✭✭Dammo

You should change them because you're not hitting them all the same way. Go for a set that you can hit all like the current 7 iron! Long and straight is over-rated!!!

Give the guy a break. He did say "i hit these irons long and straight (apart from my 7iron which i always seem to hook) but dont control that well. " So even from the first part of that statement he could mean that he finds it hard to alter the tragectory with these irons.

And even performance aside, would he be the 1st person to want to change clubs even if hitting them well enough?? I doubt it. So if that's what he wants to do then so what!

jod1983, maybe try out something like the mizuno mx200 irons. They are still forgiving but have a narrower sole making it a bit easier to shape shots if that's what you want. They will also feel and sound a bit different i'd imagine.

To the 4 persons with the info i needed thanks very much. The info has helped and have decided that i will get a pro fitting on new irons as well as the old and see what he says.
To the others why bother logging in and give a stupid comment. I did explain that control was a factor. And to the fool that didnt understand what i meant by this is, id like to be able to stop my ball on the green rather than it bounching on the front and running through it.

Easy pal. It's obvious so that you're the fool if you think changing clubs will all of a sudden give you the spin required to stop a ball. Get a few lessons and learn how to strike a ball correctly. Then you'll get the stop on the greens you so crave. That has nothing to do with the bloody clubs

eh, you're not correct there yourself pal

If he can't get any sort of stop on the ball with the MX17's then changing clubs won't help.
They will be harder to control for delicate chip shots but you will get stop with a full 7, 8 or whatever iron if it is hit correctly. Thats is what the OP is on about

Money should be spent on learning how to strike the ball correctly if it's control of the ball thats lacking.

OP came on looking for advice and got a few smart arsed comments that bore no relation to the original question. Threads like this might be frustrating for people that know everything, but for the rest of us mere mortals this is a great forum for getting the info that we need. As I was always told by my mother, the only stupid question is the one that you don't ask.

Not aimed at anyone here, but the last few posts reminded me of mr garrison's best line in south park.
"just remember kids, there's no such things as stupid questions, just stupid people."
