Highly unlikely. Most taxpayers will now view property speculation as the cause of recent tax hikes, so the mood is for imposing tax on multiple property owners as a revenge.

Sorry if that's not what you want to hear but it's what I'm hearing.

But is it Lawful or Legal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,786 ✭✭✭slimjimmc

It's an Act passed by the Oireachtas back in 2009, so I guess that makes it lawful and legal.

And it's not a holiday home tax, it's a tax on all private residential properties (which includes holiday homes, rental homes, etc) with a exemption for your primary residence.

What is "unjust" about the tax, just because a tax is "new" does not mean it is unjust...

Its unjust as a tax was already paid on the property

By that definition, any Sales Tax would be unjust, since you paying tax on your spending money (ie wages/salary) and then on the good that you purchase with the taxed salary.

Because you have the means to have a holiday home you are considered wealthy and have been chosen to shoulder some extra burden while the country is in the red financially. When you say you get nothing in return for paying the tax. Do you not use any public service or amenity in ireland?

Can this query be re-directed to the 'Taxation for Dummies' forum?

Awwww, sorry about that, didnt mean to offend you with my light-hearted remark.... if you didnt get the point of my light-hearted remark, let me translate it into a more easily digestable form for you:

Your comment 'then why should i pay then i get nothing in return for it' in respect of taxation betrays such naievity and lack of knowledge that you would be well directed to one of those self-help books, you know the type, 'DIY for Dummies' etc...

But I'm a bank robber and didn't pay any income tax (and certainly not PAYE), will I need to pay sales tax?

But why impose this tax when a tax was already paid on the purchase price

This is what the "smart" "green" economy means.

It is not the air you breathe in but the carbon dioxide you breathe out that is being taxed by the zealots Ryan and Gormley. Next year you will get water metering from the same pair and you will have to pay for installation too.

You're right. Despite the doubts of those on here, you've convinced me with your impeccable logic. I look forward to seeing how your legal challenge goes.

You don't get to choose which tax is fair or unfair. It was passed by the government, if you own a second home you should pay it. If you don't pay it, you may get fined

It also seems that the fines will accumulate with interest
